11 The cost to families in Hartlepool Health risks to children Risk of cot death approximately doubled by maternal smoking In homes where both parents smoke, the risk of cot death is nearly 4 times higher. Asthma attacks doubles the chances Bronchitis and pneumonia Glue ear and hearing problems Diabetes Meningitis Attention Deficit Disorder hyperactivity

13 Children brought up in homes where smoking is the norm are more likely to become smokers themselves. And so the cycle continues.

17 The Development of Drop In Clinics First Drop-In opened in Greatham in 2002 by Health Visitor Jenny Jones Health Visitor Lead within Hartlepool encouraged staff to undertake training with a view to rolling out further sessions For the last 10 years Hartlepool has been among the top PCT areas in the country for quitter numbers

27 Every Breath Campaign Launch Launched in August to show that smoking related COPD not only harms the smoker s s health but also destroys families. Advert reached 1.6m adults in the Tyne Tees area Breathing exercise cinema advert was shown in 22 cinemas in the North East Shown again this month and has helped trigger a rise in the number of smokers seeking help

31 STOPTOBER Campaign New National campaign to encourage every smoker to make a quit attempt during this month If smokers can stay stopped for a month then they are 5 times more likely l to stay stopped for good Promotional packs, along with local flyers have been sent out to GP practices; pharmacies; Children s Centres; libraries, youth service; leisure centres and workplaces.

33 Illegal trade A survey first carried out in 2009 and repeated in 2011 found the volume of illegal tobacco bought had gone down by 39% in the North East - worth over 36m less avoided in duty and VAT evasion.

34 In the North East, the North of England Tackling Illegal Tobacco for Better Health Programme - set up to bring together the work of the NHS, HMRC, councils and police - has resulted in less illegal tobacco being bought and sold on estates, fewer people turning a blind eye and more action aimed at bringing sellers to justice.
