What Is Trauma? Trauma is a response to adversity where one s ability to cope is overwhelmed not the event itself. Trauma can impact children s neurobiological development

Common Behaviors: Aggression, anti-social behaviors Depression Defiance Perfectionism Hyperactivity Social Withdrawal Rapid and unexpected emotional shifts Prejudice Common Thread: Student s sense of safety is a key driver to their behavior 29

Child victims are at a greater risk of Offending Obesity Smoking Suicide Diabetes Cancer Depression No physical activity Alcohol use Drug Use Sexually Transmitted Diseases Financial Management Challenges, Homelessness, Poverty 30

ACEs and Addiction ACE Score of 6 = 46X more likely to be an injection drug user later in life Vincent J. Felitti, MD, The Origins of Addiction: Evidence from the Adverse Childhood Experiences Study, Department of Preventive Medicine: Kaiser Permanente Medical Care Program, February 16, 2004, %20OriginsofAddiction.pdf.

More children than ever are coming to school having experienced ACEs. Study expanded definition of adversity than previously thought. Educators WON T know which students are affected by ACEs in any given classroom 32

School and Law Enforcement Collaboration 1. Collect community ACE data 2. Create communication protocol to identify students with ACEs 3. Train Law Enforcement and School staff 4. Add ACEs into your prevention framework

Collect ACE Data DA Office, PD - # of child victims/witnesses - # of child abuse cases - # of overdoses with child present - # of overdoses involving a parent - Crime mapping Where are the schools? Where are the neighborhoods? Child Protection Agencies - # of youth in foster care - # of child custody cases

Police/School Communication

Enhancing Community Responses to the Opioid Crisis: Serving Our Youngest Crime Victims Create DEC Subcommittee within Task Force Bring awareness on DEC to agencies in contact with DEC Help agencies identify DEC Provide DEC with Direct Services Assist DEC in navigating systems

Trauma Sensitive Overdose Response Train Police PCO Home Visit Handle with Care Family Resource Center

Add ACEs to Prevention Framework Objective: Reduce past 30 day use of heroin to 0 amongst youth ages 18 and under by 9/29/20 - Strategy 1: Identifying children with adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and training adolescent professionals on how to provide the proper trauma sensitive care Train law enforcement and schools within the coalition on the Handle with Care model Distribute copies of the Helping Traumatized Children Learn best practice book authored by the Trauma and Learning Policy Initiative
