PUBLIC HEALTH The Opioid Epidemic in Colorado June 29, 2017 Chris Urbina, MD, MPH Medical Officer City and County of Broomfield Kaleigh Becker, MPH Substance Abuse Prevention Educator

Patient Story Jamie is a 20 year old college student who comes to the ER to get pain medication. He hurt his knee in an ultimate frisbee game about two weeks ago. He initially went to his primary care provider who told him that he had a sprain and told him to rest, use ice, perform some physical therapy exercises and to use ibuprofen or acetaminophen to relieve pain. He tells the ER doctor that since he start using this pain medication (which he got from a friend who obtained them from his parent/s medicine cabinet) his pain has gone away. He has a big game coming up for the college championship and the team is counting him. 1) 2) Does this sound familiar to anyone? Could this have been prevented? How?

Heroin Poisoning Deaths by County, Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment,

Broomfield and Boulder Youth Data 21.1% of high school students believe it s sort of/very easy to get prescription drugs without a prescription. 15.1% of high school students report taking a prescription drug without a doctor s prescription one or more times during their life. Healthy Kids Colorado Survey, 2015

Preliminary Heroin Use Survey results from a local public health department A Colorado Local Health Department 11 question survey assessing demographics and the role of prescription and heroin usage specific to the individual. Survey was voluntary with no compensation offered. Volunteers in the survey are asked for consent and informed about how the information will be utilized.

Heroin Survey: Sample of Results How did you get the prescription painkiller the first time you used it without a prescription or in ways other than what was prescribed for you? 68.75% 31.25% 7.1% 7.1% 35.7% Did prescription painkillers play a role in your transition to heroin use? 50%

Heroin Survey: Participant Stories Still in pain, cheaper to get heroin, didn't want to. Wish there were programs and more help for it, no one wants to live like this. I was going through withdrawals and I found it to help with my pain more than the pills. Then because of my drug use I lost my kids. I wish I could find a way to get off of this. Had a fire, lost everything, was burned from crawling through to get my son, was prescribed Xanax for PTSD and Percocet for pain, was severely depressed, used too many pills to feel okay. Had surgery on hand, got PERC 30's then got cut off. Then switched to heroin because it s cheaper and didn't want to be sick!!! Dr. ***** gave me 360 thirties a month!!
