2 Opioids Class of drugs that work on the endorphin system. What are some examples? What are some of the risks?

3 Opioid use disorder Chronic medical condition More than physical dependence Bio psycho social disease Craving, withdrawal, affect relationships, thinking, behaviors Most effectively treated with medications, i.e. buprenorphine, methadone, or naltrexone.

7 Prevention Prevention means turning off the tap of new diagnoses. Can also include supporting recovery and preventing death.

Include a range of actions people can take: Primary-Disposal, safe storage, safe prescribing, resilience, education Secondary-Access to treatment, helpline, early intervention for youth. Tertiary-Naloxone, other harm reduction, Good Samaritan laws.

20 Slow or no breathing Blue skin, lips, fingernails, Won t wake up What is overdose?

21 Overdose response 1. Check for signs of overdose. Try to wake the person up. Not breathing, or very slow breathing Can t wake them up Cold clammy skin, or blue skin 2. If you can t wake them up, call 911! 3. Administer naloxone if you have it. 4. Do rescue breathing or chest compressions. 5. Administer a second dose if they are not awake after 2-5 minutes. 6. Stay with them until help arrives.

22 Naloxone Naloxone (aka Narcan) is the antidote to opioid overdose. Blocks the receptor in the brain for opioids, and puts someone into withdrawal in a few minutes. Does not make someone more likely to use more drugs.

23 Who should have naloxone? People who use opioids regularly: Use heroin or other opioids illicitly Are in treatment for OUD Are prescribed opioids, and: Use alcohol or other drugs Are prescribed benzos Have problems with breathing or heart trouble Friends and family of people who use opioids.

24 Laws WA RCW Allows anyone to obtain and use naloxone to reverse an overdose. Protects providers who prescribe naloxone, directly by standing order, and organizations who distribute it. WA RCW Encourages people to call 911 in case of an overdose by providing protection from prosecution for possession.

25 Tips for talking about naloxone Naloxone does not make someone more likely to use drugs. Similar to having an epi-pen or fire extinguisher Has no side effects except opioid withdrawal. Can save a life!

26 Tips for talking about naloxone Discuss other risk reduction strategies Help them make a plan Make sure others know where they keep naloxone Take the opportunity to talk about interest in treatment.
