5 NEWPORT ORTHOPEDIC INSTITUTE Other medicines you may be prescribed Senokot S Constipation is a common issue due to the use of your narcotic pain medication, iron and a decrease in your activity level after joint replacement. We may prescribe Colace to prevent significant problems with constipation, particularly if you are susceptible to this. Milk of magnesia, Miralax, or over-the-counter bowel medication can also be useful for this problem. Do not take these if you develop diarrhea. Iron: (325 mg daily, available over-the-counter) Iron (ferrous sulfate) may be prescribed as well. You will take Iron one time per day for four weeks after surgery. Iron may make your stool dark or black. This color may persist for several days after completing the course of iron. Celebrex: (Occasionally an issue with insurance coverage) Celebrex is a non-narcotic medication used to treat pain. It is similar to medication such as ibuprofen, however, it does not increase the chance of bleeding. You may take this prior to surgery when you are not able to take other anti-inflammatories. Celebrex may be continued one time per day after surgery for 2 to 4 weeks to attempt to decrease the need for narcotics. Patients with allergies to sulfa may not be prescribed this medication. Pain medications: We will provide you with a prescription for pain medications if you go home from hospital. If you go to a rehab facility, they will provide you with a prescription for pain medications when you go home. The goal of the pain medication is to manage your pain, however, it will not make the pain resolve completely. The pain medication will make you more comfortable with physical therapy and sleeping. It is often helpful to take pain medication about an hour prior to therapy. You may not drive while taking narcotics pain medications. We recommend that you begin to wean or stop taking pain medication by four weeks after your joint replacement. Although the pain will not be gone, you should transition to overthe-counter medications Tylenol/Aleve/ibuprofen. You should also try other methods of pain relief and reduction of swelling including ice and elevation. Other forms of distraction including hobbies or visitors may help with pain control. 5

6 Narcotic (Opioid) Safety Always follow these important safety tips. Never taken opiod pain reliever unless it is prescribed for you. Take opiods only as directed. Do not take more opioid or take it more often than is prescribed by your healthcare provider. Do not use opiods with alcohol or any other drugs unless approved by the opioid prescriber. Protect and lock up your opioids in a safe place at all times. Properly dispose of any leftover medicine. Never share opoids with another person. It is illegal and dangerous. Be prepared for opioid emergencies. Know the signs of trouble and what to do for hopefully avoid overmedication or overdose. Read the instructions that come with your opioid prescription. Contact your opioid prescriber or pharmacist with any questions. Opioid medicines can have side effects. The most common are: Constipation due to opioids. You should ask your opioid prescriber how to treat this. Nausea may last several days. There is medicine that can help with this. Sedation, a feeling of being mildly tired or groggy, the last a few days after starting opioids or when the dose is increased. Less common side effects: Itching, dry skin, confusion, muscle twitching, dry mouth, sweating, fatigue, weakness, mild headaches, and are usually temporary. Allergy and addiction occur rarely to opioids taken as prescribed for pain. Take opioid pain relievers safely. Never chew, cut, crush, or dissolve openly tablets. Never open opioid capsules unless you are specifically instructed to do so. Opioid patches must never be cut or folded. They should stick of the skin completely. Follow directions for use carefully. Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how opioids will affect you. 6

7 NEWPORT ORTHOPEDIC INSTITUTE BE ON THE ALERT FOR OPIOID OR MEDICATION OR OVERDOSE (share this with your family and caregivers) Overmedication Warning Call Healthcare Provider.
