2 Lubricants, Vanishing Oils, & Rust Inhibitors Brief Overview Used when making or repairing metal parts (e.g., honing, stamping, cutting, etc.) Approx. half are petroleum-based and half are water or vegetable-based Vanishing oils are lubricants with high vapor pressures Metalworking fluids are sometimes diluted with VOC-emitting solvents

10 Baseline Lubricants and Rust Inhibitors General Solvent Toxicity Acute or Short-term Central Nervous System (brain) Depressant effect when you inhale excessive amounts - headache, dizziness, nausea, drowsiness (feeling drunk) - drinking alcohol (also a solvent) will increase symptoms and make them last longer - symptoms will clear up when exposure stops Eyes, Nose, Throat and Lungs Vapors can cause irritation. Stinging & burning of eyes, burning or soreness of nose and throat, hoarseness, coughing, chest tightness, & shortness of breath. Skin Dissolve natural protective oils causing irritation & skin rash (dryness, redness, flaking, and cracking of skin allows solvents to enter body).

11 Baseline Lubricants and Rust Inhibitors General Solvent Toxicity (Cont d) Chronic or Long-term Effects Central Nervous System (brain) Long-lasting and possibly permanent effects on the brain from repeated, frequent overexposure for months or years (solvent or toxic encephalopathy) - fatigue, sleeplessness, poor coordination, difficulty in concentrating, loss of short-term memory, and personality changes such as depression, anxiety, and irritability. Liver and Kidneys Damage is rare if there are no noticeable effects on the nervous system (symptoms of drunkeness). Long-term exposure to solvents and drinking alcohol can increase risk of liver damage. Pregnancy/Developmental Toxicity Can reach the developing fetus and can contaminate breast milk
