Funded under a series of investigator-initiated, competing research grants from the National Institute on Drug Abuse, this ongoing national study of American secondary school students, college students, and adults through age 55 is now in its 42nd year. Epidemiological, etiological, and policy research on the use of tobacco, alcohol, illicit drugs, steroids, and risk behaviors for the spread of HIV/AIDS. (Co-Investigators: Jerald G. Bachman, Patrick M. O Malley, John E. Schulenberg, Richard A. Miech, Megan Patrick, John Wallace, & Katherine Keyes.) Principal Investigator, the Youth, Education, and Society (YES) study. Completed in its 18th year in August, 2015, and funded under research grants from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, this national study included the evaluation of policies, programs, practices, and other environmental influences (particularly in secondary schools, but also at the community and state levels) on smoking, drinking, illicit drug use, healthy eating, exercise, and obesity among American adolescents. (Co-principal Investigators: Patrick M. O Malley, Natalie Colabianchi; Co-investigators Jerald G. Bachman, John E. Schulenberg, Revathy Kumar.) The study of psychoactive substance use (tobacco, alcohol, and illicit drugs) among adolescents and adults. Substance abuse policy and prevention. The evaluation of substance abuse policies and programs. The study of evolving value and lifestyle orientations. Risk and protective behaviors related to HIV/AIDS. Obesity and healthy behaviors in adolescence and young adulthood. Environmental influences on these various behaviors. Social issues and social problems more generally. 2
