Working with Transgender and Gender-Variant Clients within a Harm Reduction Model Wednesday, October 3, 2012 Imani Henry, HRC Consultant Working with transgender clients can be challenging. Transgender people are highly vulnerable and marginalized in the United States. Multiple issues such as society stigma, depression, unemployment, substance use, lack of support system, identity documents, housing, and transportation are all barriers that many transgender people experience when trying to access services. This training will provide insight into challenges faced daily by transgender people. We will gauge participant's knowledge and comfort level in understanding transgender identities and develop skills to effectively work with transgender clients. We will also explore the reasons why transgender women are particularly vulnerable to HIV/STD infection, substance use, and sex work and how harm reduction strategies can work in eliminating barriers to HIV and other services. LGBT Youth and Substance Use Thursday, October 4, 2012 Anthony Morgan, HRC Consultant The ab(use) of illicit and/or over-the-counter substances has become a common theme identified in research studies and clinical reports of LGBT youth. This full-day workshop will review national and local research findings, substance usage trends and unique variations by gender expression and identity, and pharmacology of substances commonly reported by LGBT youth. During the workshop participants will also explore some commonly reported stressors contributing to substance ab(use) such as verbal and/or physical abuse in home, community and school environments. Finally, participants will identify best practices for working with substance abusing/addicted LGBT youth. Overview of Harm Reduction Tuesday, October 16, :00AM 1:00PM Moya Brown and Skylar Panuska, HRC Staff Harm reduction is a set of practical strategies to reduce negative consequences of drug use and improve the quality of the client s life. The harm reduction approach incorporates a spectrum of strategies which include safer and managed use, as well as abstinence. This approach helps providers effectively meet their clients where they re at. Participants who attend this training will: understand the principles of harm reduction, participate in activities designed to assist them in exploring attitudes and beliefs about harm reduction, and develop practical skills and interventions that can be used in their work with substance users. 2
Trans 202 Strategy Session: Taking Trans-Inclusion to the Next Level Thursday, November 1, 2012 Imani Henry, HRC Consultant Your agency has covered the basics on becoming a more trans-friendly environment and now you want create better programming or interventions geared toward your trans and non-conforming clients. Using a harm reduction model participants will engage in an in-depth discussion about the political, medical, and cultural trends impacting trans and gender non-conforming communities in NYC and nationally. Participants will also examine what interventions and strategies are best suited for their organization and for the trans and gender non-conforming communities that they serve. Highly recommended for direct service staff as well as program coordinators and directors. Working Towards LGBT Cultural Competency and Equity Tuesday, November 6, 2012 Doneley Meris, HRC Consultant This highly interactive training is for providers who wish to enhance their services for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender, and queer communities (LGBTQ) through strengthening client engagement, conducting effective outreach to LGBTQ communities, and building culturally competent environments. Participants will learn more about political, medical and social issues relevant to these communities including issues specific to trans and gender-non-conforming communities (TGNC), and how to apply effective harm reduction strategies to meet their clients needs. Crystal Meth 101 Thursday, November 8, 2012 Anthony Morgan, HRC Consultant Crystal Meth 101 is an introductory training to the pharmacology, body/brain impact and social/sexual trends of meth use, especially among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM). Participants working with sexually diverse, crystal meth-using populations will gain an in-depth understanding of some of the body/brain/behavior harms associated with meth use. Finally, through small group case study analysis, participants will develop possible harm reduction strategies. 3
Motivational Interviewing 101 Monday, November 12, 2012 Moya Brown and Adam Viera, HRC Staff *CASAC credits are available for this course Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a collaborative approach to working with people experiencing negative consequences from substance use and other challenging behaviors. Participants will learn MI techniques such as reflective listening, delivering feedback, summarizing, decisional balancing, and developing change plans. Strategies for translating MI principals in action will be discussed (e.g. expressing empathy, developing discrepancy, avoiding argument, and dealing with resistance). This session will also focus on the use of ambivalence in the counseling process and strategies for increasing motivation, self-efficacy and optimism. This workshop will utilize case examples, role-playing, and peer feedback as methods to incorporate new skills learned. Motivational Interviewing 201- Advanced Motivational Interviewing Tuesday, November 13, 2012 Moya Brown and Adam Viera, HRC Staff *CASAC credits are available for this course Practitioners of motivational interviewing (MI) know that it is a skill that requires constant practice with accompanying feedback. This practice-focused training is intended to be a highly interactive session for individuals who have already been trained on the basics of MI. Participants will have the opportunity both to observe and practice motivational interviewing in a series of role play sessions, and will give and receive constructive feedback after these role play sessions. Again, attendance at an introductory motivational interviewing training is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Opioid Overdose Prevention Build Your Skills & Knowledge Get the SKOOP! Wednesday, November 28, :00AM 1:00PM Sharon Stancliff & William Matthews, HRC Staff Heroin and other opioid overdoses are a common cause of death among users, yet these deaths are often preventable through education, mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, and when possible, through the administration of Naloxone (Narcan). In this workshop, participants will start by learning the essentials of preventing opioid overdose deaths including prevention, recognition, and action. Participants will receive a certificate as a Trained Overdose Responder, and become qualified to train heroin or opioid users and colleagues at their own facilities on how to prevent an overdose. Participants will learn how to implement a New York State Department of Health-approved program with support from the Harm Reduction Coalition. 4
Managing-Up: Working More Effectively with Managers Tuesday, December 4, :00AM 1:00PM Moya Brown, HRC Staff This training will give participants the knoweldge and skills to develop a mutually beneficial relationship with supervisors. Participants will learn how to manage-up and the benefits of it, such as career advancement and helping others recognize your value. Particpiants will be introduced to and practice effective work strategies that meet the needs of both line staff and management; and by the end of the training, will have the tools to facilitate a supportive and productive professional relationship with supervisors. Sexy Harm Reduction: Using Harm Reduction to Address the Sexual Risk of Drug Users and Their Partners Tuesday, December 5, 2012 Adam Viera, HRC Staff Sexual risk behavior plays a significant role in new HIV cases among substance users. This one-day training will build participant knowledge and skills in offering sexual harm reduction options to substance users. As a result of this training, participants will be able to: 1) recall the latest research that shows how expanded syringe access and methadone maintenance programs assist in reducing the number of new HIV cases among substance users; 2) identify and discuss clients sexual risk behaviors when using drugs and alcohol; and 3) identify and present harm reduction strategies and options for reducing clients sexual risk behaviors when using drugs and alcohol. Group Facilitation Skills Tuesday, December 12, 2012 Moya Brown, HRC Staff *CASAC credits are available for this course This training is specifically designed to support management-level staff in determining how to facilitate professional meeting while remaining focused on meeting objectives and the importance of group process. The training provides an overview of what group facilitation is and why it is important. The training also covers the role of the facilitator at the four major stages of a group (opening, facilitation, closing and debrief), and provides instruction and the opportunity to practice and receive feedback on key facilitation techniques. This training involves many exciting activities and a high level of participation. 5
Smarter Sex is the New Safer Sex- Anal Pleasure and Health 101 Tuesday, December 18, 2012 Bryan Kutner, HRC Consultant The HIV epidemic has narrowly focused attention on the harms of anal sex, despite the pleasure people find in practicing it. Thirty years later, workers are often hungry for solid information about anal sex that isn't limited by a narrow focus on HIV prevention: how and why people are having anal sex, and ways they can lessen associated harms if they are not using condoms. This training aims to nourish workers who are interested in questions about anal health, by building comfort and confidence in exploring some of the pleasures, harms and harm reduction strategies associated with anal sex. By the end of the training, participants will understand how hidden values shape information about anal pleasure and health; be able to describe basic anal physiology with a focus on pleasure; practice using simple client-centered tools to communicate about anal health with a sexually diverse population of clients who are not ready, willing or able to use condoms; and identify resources to further their education. Smarter Sex is the New Safer Sex- Anal Pleasure and Health 201 Wednesday, December 19, 2012 Bryan Kutner, HRC Consultant This training requires previous participation in Smarter Sex 101. We will more immediately delve into ways to communicate about anal sex with consumers of services, primarily rooted in the skills of motivational interviewing. Consider bringing your own cases to the training, so that we can collectively help one another discover best practices. By the end of the training, participants will deepen their understanding of how values shape the ways we relate to clients; will be able to verbally communicate basic anal physiology with a focus on both pleasure and harm; will practice using simple client-centered tools to communicate about anal health with a sexually diverse population of clients who are not ready, willing or able to use condoms; and will identify resources to further their education. 6
