32 Spindletop Center: Oral Health Project Severe mental illness increases the risk of poor oral health not only because of the patients increased risk of adverse side-effects from medications but also because of lack of motivation/self-care, poor oral hygiene, fear, the costs, and the difficulty of accessing a dentist. The books and dental kits were very effective in raising interest and desire to improve their oral health. Most of our clients are on fixed income. To have items provided and have the client friendly books was most appealing. 32
