Vitamin D to the Rescue A vitamin D boost and 22% lower risk for heart attack. A recent Harvard study of more than 18,000 people found that people who exercise vigorously (such as running or jogging) 3 or more hours weekly have a 22% lower risk for heart attack-- for a reason that might surprise you. The researchers discovered that people who work out vigorously have higher levels of vitamin D. People who exercise tend to be out in the sun, which raises their vitamin D level. lead study author Andrea Chomistek stated. Another large study highlighted the risks of not getting enough of the sunshine vitamin: Those with the lowest vitamin D levels were 40% more likely to develop heart disease and 81% more likely to die from it than those with optimal levels. 4

News you can use Life Extension Longer life. Want to add up to 7 years to your life? Lace up your sneakers and take a 20-to-25-minute outdoor walk daily. In a 2015 study of people ages 30 to 60, those who engaged in daily aerobic activity, including brisk walking, jog- ging, and high-intensity interval training, had anti-aging benefits that could increase their lifespan by 3 to 7 years. This fun fitness tip can help you move more: Listening to upbeat music not only makes walking more enjoyable, but can boost your endurance by up to 15%, according to the American Council on Exercise. That s a wonderful reason to plug in your headphones, go outdoors, and start putting more spring into your step! 5

Did you know that eating a variety of colorful fruits and vegetables can have amazing benefits, including lowering your risk for heart attack, stroke, high blood pressure, diabetes and several forms of cancer? What s more, eating certain vegetables may be linked to better memory and longer life, recent studies suggest. Yet fewer than one in ten adults eat the recommended amount of these nutritional powerhouses, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). One easy way to reach your control: fill half your plate with fruits and vegetables at each meal. For a full spectrum of health benefits, include these colors in your daily diet: Red: Lycopene is the pigment that gives some fruits, such as tomatoes, their ruby hue. Several studies suggest that tomatoes, which are also high in disease-fighting antioxidants, vitamins A and C, folic acid, and beta carotene, have surprisingly powerful benefits for vascular health, including reducing levels of oxidized LDL cholesterol (the kind that can form plaque ] in the coronary arteries) in both healthy people and those with type 2 diabetes. 6

Eating tomatoes or tomato products is also linked to reductions in blood pressure and inflammation. A large study also found that high consumption of lycopene from tomatoes was associated with a 65% reduction in stroke risk. Purple and blue. These colors results from pigments called anthocyanins that may enhance brain health. Indeed, blueberries are often called brain berries because studies link them to reduced risk for age-related memory loss. For example, the Nurses Health Study reported that women who ate the most blueberries and strawberries had slower rates of cognitive decline and lower heart attack risk than those who ate the least. A Harvard study also reports that resveratrol in red wine (as well as berries, grape skin, and peanuts) activates a protein that contributes to health and increased longevity in animals. ] 7

Green. Two Harvard studies of nearly 110,000 men and women found that people who ate 8 or more servings of fruits and veggies daily were 30% less likely to suffer a heart attack or stroke, compared to those who ate less than 1.5 servings. While all produce contributed to this benefit, the studies found that leafy green vegetables (such as spinach, Swiss chard, lettuce and mustard greens) and cruciferous vegetables (such as broccoli, cabbage and Brussels spouts) were particularly beneficial for lowering risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD), the leading killer of Americans. People who eat a diet high in fiber (found in most fruits and vegetables) have a 56% to 59% lower risk of dying from CVD, infectious disease, or respiratory disorders, according to a study of nearly 400,000 people ages 50 and older. ] 8

Yellow and orange. The Harvard studies discussed above also found that citrus fruits, such as oranges, lemons and grapefruit, also make important contributions to reducing heart attack and stroke risk. These fruits contain citrus liminoids that have been shown to help fight cancers of the mouth, skin, lung, stomach, and colon in lab tests and may help lower cholesterol. Some yellow fruits, such as pineapples, contain bromelain, a mixture of enzymes that have been used for centuries to treat indigestion and fight inflammation. 10 Colorectal Cancer Screening Update: No Specific Test Is Favored A theoretical modeling exercise showed that two strategies annual FIT-DNA testing and colonoscopy every 10 years each conferred the highest number of life-years gained (about 250) and cancer deaths averted (about 23) per 1000 patients screened. The same two testing strategies also were predicted to cause the greatest number of adverse gastrointestinal and cardiovascular events ( events per 1000 patients screened). Overall, four tests were labeled by the USPSTF as having the most efficient balance of benefits and harms: colonoscopy every 10 years, annual FIT, FS every 10 years plus annual FIT, and CT colonography every 5 years. However, these strategies were not ranked or recommended over others. The benefit for screening older patients (age, 76) depends on overall health, predicted lifespan, ability to tolerate cancer therapy if required, and prior screening history. Older patients in good health who have not been screened previously should be considered for a first screening. 10

Butter Gets a Reprieve Health Day News - Butter may not be the unhealthy food many Americans believe it to be; however, that doesn't mean that butter provides any real health benefit, according to research published online June 29 in PLOS ONE. A research team reviewed data from nine studies that included 636,151 people living in 15 countries. Average butter consumption for individuals in the study ranged from about one-third of a serving to just over three servings per day. One serving equals about one tablespoon of butter, the team said. The researchers found that eating butter was only weakly associated with increased risk in all-cause mortality (relative risk [RR], 1.01; 95 percent confidence interval [CI], 1.00 to 1.03; P = 0.045) and not associated at all with cardiovascular disease (RR, 1.00; 95 percent CI, 0.98 to 1.02; P = 0.704). There was a slight association with protection against diabetes (RR, 0.96; 95 percent CI, 0.93 to 0.99; P = 0.021). "Overall, our results suggest that butter should neither be demonized nor considered 'back' as a route to good health," senior author Dariush Mozaffarian, M.D., dean of the Tufts University School of ] Nutrition Science and Policy in Boston, said in a university news release (HealthDay News) 11

Statins also get a Reprieve The authors evaluated 2331 patients with chronic heart failure under standard care and randomized them to exercise training (ET) or no ET to determine if there was a treatment interaction between statin use and response to ET. The trial duration was 3 months. Differences were sought for quality of life, peak oxygen consumption, and 6-minute walking distance. Results confirmed that no significant interactions were found between statin medications and ET. Attenuation in ET response in those taking statins has been previously found; however, these findings were not replicated in this large HF cohort, indicating a need for continued research. 12

Statins??? Treatment for cancer (HealthDay News) -- Statins may help lower mortality in patients with four common types of cancer, according to a study presented at the European Society of Cardiology's Frontiers in CardioVascular Biology 2016, held from July 8 to 10 in Florence, Italy. Rahul Potluri, M.D., a clinical lecturer at the Aston University School of Medicine in Birmingham, U.K., and colleagues collected data on 929,552 patients listed in a clinical database from January 2000 to March Data on deaths was obtained from the U.K. Office for National Statistics. Among the patients in the study, 7,997 had lung cancer, 5,481 had breast cancer, 4,629 had prostate cancer, and 4,570 had bowel cancer. After adjusting for factors including age, gender, ethnicity, and common causes of death, the researchers found that those taking statins lived longer than those who were not taking them. Patients taking statins appeared to have a 22 percent lower risk of dying from lung cancer, a 43 percent lower risk of dying from breast cancer, a 47 percent lower risk of dying from prostate cancer, and a 30 percent lower risk of dying from bowel cancer. "The results of this study strengthen the argument for a clinical trial evaluating the possible protective effect of statins and other routinely used cardiovascular medications in patients with cancer. Whether it is statins and/or other cardiovascular drugs in combination that have an effect on mortality remains to be seen," Potluri said in a news release from the European Society of Cardiology. "Patients with cancer who are at high risk or have established cardiovascular disease should be given statins as per current ] guidelines. I don't think at the moment we can give statins for cancer per se. But this could change if there was a positive result in the clinical trial." 13
