5 What is Modulen IBD? 1 Modulen IBD is a nutritionally complete powdered feed, designed to meet the specific nutritional needs of people with Crohn s disease. Modulen IBD contains a naturally occurring anti-inflammatory factor. This may help during the repair phase, after or during a flare up of Crohn s disease. How much Modulen IBD do I need to take? 2 3 Your dietitian will assess how much Modulen IBD you need to take based on your age, activity level and weight. The amount you need to drink will be increased slowly over a few days until you reach the full recommended volume. This will help your body to get used to Modulen IBD. If you are struggling with the volume of Modulen IBD you have been advised to drink, it is very important that you discuss this with your dietitian or healthcare professional (HCP). It is unlikely that you will feel hungry if you are taking the recommended volume of Modulen IBD. However, if you do please contact your dietitian. Remember, whilst taking Modulen IBD, you must not eat or drink anything else apart from water, unless your dietitian has specified otherwise. Can I flavour Modulen IBD? Modulen IBD has a pleasant slight vanilla flavour. Nevertheless, taste fatigue can occur after some time, therefore Modulen IBD can be flavoured using alternative flavour options such as decaffeinated coffee or milk shake mixers, which are found in many shopping outlets throughout the UK and widely available in a variety of flavours. Your dietitian can provide you with more information on alternative ways to flavour Modulen IBD. QUESTIONS & ANSWERS 4

6 How do I prepare Modulen IBD? Please follow the simple steps below to prepare Modulen IBD: 4 1. Wash hands thoroughly. Follow the mixing table and select the volume required. Measure cool boiled or bottled water (room temperature) and pour into a clean bowl or container. 3. Scoop and level the desired amount of powder using the scoop in the tin or weigh in grams. 4. Add the powder to the water and immediately stir until well mixed. 5. After use, store the scoop inside the can as shown. Shaker cups are available for the preparation of Modulen IBD. Your dietitian will be able to provide you with one of these. *Please note that your Dietitian or HCP may recommend a more concentrated preparation of Modulen IBD to suit your requirements. QUESTIONS & ANSWERS 5

7 5 How do I store Modulen IBD? Modulen IBD should be stored in a cool, dry place and be consumed by the best before date It is important to replace the plastic lid after use. Once opened, the product should be used within 4 weeks. Top tips when taking Modulen IBD Modulen IBD is best served chilled. If you do not have access to a fridge, try to keep your Modulen IBD chilled during the day by storing it in a flask or in a cooler bag Try taking Modulen IBD through a straw, this may make it easier to take Try to drink additional water each day, to ensure you are well hydrated. Please discuss further with your HCP. Do not boil Modulen IBD Regular brushing of teeth may help to keep your mouth fresh 6 Can I mix Modulen IBD powder with medications? No, patients should take other medications separately with the extra fluid allowed. 7 Can Modulen IBD be mixed with milk? No, it is already casein based from cows milk, therefore Modulen IBD should only be mixed with cooled boiled water. 6

8 8 How do I fit Modulen IBD into my daily routine? It is possible to prepare Modulen IBD in advance and take it to school or work in a shaker cup or flask and carry in a cooler bag. Ensure consumption within 6 hours if kept at room temperature or within 24 hours if refrigerated. 9 When should I expect to feel better? Most people start to feel better after 7-10 days of taking Modulen IBD exclusively. But this may vary from one person to another. Your doctor and dietitian can provide you with further advice on this. 10 How long do I need to use Modulen IBD for? Evidence suggests that the optimal period, if using as a sole source of nutrition, is between 6-10 weeks. Your healthcare professional will guide you on the duration of your dietary management. 11 What happens when I finish taking Modulen IBD? Your dietitian and doctor will advise you on how long to take Modulen IBD. They will monitor your progress on it and advise when it is appropriate to stop.
