3 Are there specific vitamins I should take if I m over 50? Good nutrition is important at any age, but even more so once you reach 50. Dietary needs change at this time, and we become more prone to certain medical conditions, such as osteoporosis. This condition, in which bones get thin and brittle and the risk of fractures increases, is most common in women over 50, however this can affect men too. As you get older, some supplements can help you maintain better health. Calcium Calcium combines with other substances to give bones strength and shape. Indeed, the bones contain almost all the body s calcium. But did you know that calcium is also needed for healthy heart, muscle, blood and nerve function? Vitamin D Vitamin D is involved in many bodily processes, including calcium absorption, bone mineralisation, muscle and nerve function, and cell growth. Vitamin D also helps maintain muscle strength, which may reduce the incidence of falls in the elderly. Fish oil A fish oil supplement provides the body with omega-3 fatty acids, which may benefit heart, brain, nerve and general health. Omega-3s may also help maintain healthy blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Multivitamin Multivitamins targeted at people aged 50 and over can contain a combination of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and herbs tailored for this age, and may help meet this group s nutritional needs and support overall wellbeing. Should I be taking a vitamin to support my prescription medication? For advice about your individual needs, speak with your local Chemmart pharmacist or doctor. It really depends on the drug. Prescription medications and vitamin supplements can interact, potentially affecting how well they work. These drug interactions can have unexpected side effects, some of which may be harmful. However, some supplements actually support prescription medications. For example, if you re taking a statin, you could try coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) as there s evidence it may lessen side effects. But don t take vitamin E, which can reduce the statin s effectiveness. Another pairing to avoid is warfarin and vitamin K, which interferes with warfarin s blood-thinning effects. If you ve been prescribed a course of antibiotics, you may find probiotics beneficial. Antibiotics disturb the body s balance of friendly bacteria, so a probiotic can help restore it. For best results, they should be taken at least two hours before or after antibiotics. For specific information on what supplements to take or avoid with your prescription medication, consult your local Chemmart pharmacist or doctor. 4 Carolyn s Tip As soon as you notice your child s temperature rising, cool them down with a cold cloth and a cool drink of water. What is the best way to manage my child s fever? Children develop a fever a temperature higher than 37.5 C when their bodies are trying to fight an infection caused by bacteria or a virus. Fevers sometimes occur after immunisation. Your child may feel hot, have a flushed face, chattering teeth, sweaty skin, or shiver. Their hands and feet may be cold though the rest of the body is hot. Children with a fever can feel uncomfortable and, in severe cases, experience fits, so it s worth preventing their temperature from getting too high. Natural treatments include placing a cold washcloth on the skin, having a lukewarm bath and drinking plenty of water. THESE Kool'n'Soothe Kids Fever Gel Sheets 4 Pack* Nurofen for Children Infant Drops Baby 3+ Months 50mL* # What cough/cold medications are safe for my child? Cough and cold medicines according to the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) should not be given to children aged 0 to 6 and only given to children aged 6 to 11 on the advice of a pharmacist, doctor or nurse. In fact, the TGA warns that children under six may look like they have a cold when, in fact, they have a more serious condition such as the flu, asthma, bronchitis or allergic rhinitis. In such cases, prompt medical attention and treatment is needed. For older children, cough and cold medicines will temporarily reduce symptoms, including a runny nose, nasal congestion, cough, aches and fever. They do not lessen the severity or duration of a viral infection. For children under six, instead of cough and cold medicines, you can help relieve symptoms with natural remedies such as warm drinks, saline nasal sprays and vaporisers. Also, make sure your child has plenty of fluids and rest. For more advice on treating your child s cough or cold, speak with your local Chemmart pharmacist. If symptoms worsen or last longer than 48 hours, consult your doctor. Fess Littlenoses Saline Nasal Spray 15mL + Aspirator* # You can also reduce your child s temperature with paracetamol or ibuprofen. Be sure to choose the right one: Paracetamol relieves pain. Ibuprofen reduces inflammation. If you need to use both, alternate them (don t use them together). Keep in mind that paracetamol and ibuprofen may reduce fever symptoms, but they don t treat the cause. So always consult your doctor for a diagnosis. 5 FAST FACTS What can I do to improve my upset stomach? Digestive discomfort is one of the most common complaints heard in pharmacies. Symptoms often include stomach ache, bloating, wind or cramps. A happy digestive system is important for overall health and wellbeing, so it s important to get to the bottom of the issue. Cause There are, however, many possible causes. It may require trial and error, in consultation with your local Chemmart pharmacist or medical professional, to determine the source of the problem. Some possible causes may be: a poor diet a food intolerance (e.g. lactose, fructose) reflux constipation menstruation stress irritable bowel syndrome. Treatment Once you know the reason, you can start exploring the best treatments. Several groups of products are available, each addressing different causes and related symptoms: Antacids neutralise excess stomach acid, relieving heartburn and indigestion. Antiflatulents reduces excess gas bubbles in the stomach, lessening wind pain. Anticholinergics or antispasmodics relax the gut muscles, reducing cramps or pain in the intestines, stomach or bladder Fibre is essential for digestive health. Gradually increasing your intake of dietary fibre can help eliminate toxins from your body and improve your overall health. Heartburn and indigestion Indigestion describes pain or discomfort in the upper abdomen, generally after eating. A common form is heartburn, which occurs when stomach acid rises to the oesophagus. Symptoms of indigestion can include nausea, fullness during or long after eating, and discomfort, burning or bloating in the upper abdomen. In heartburn, a burning chest pain rises to the throat, typically after eating. To help relieve mild indigestion or heartburn, you can: eat small meals often and avoid triggers which may include spicy, fatty or processed foods, fizzy drinks, caffeine, alcohol and smoking eat at least two hours before bedtime maintain a healthy weight take an over-the-counter antacid if stomach acid is causing your heartburn. Gas and bloating Gas not released through burping or flatulence can accumulate in the stomach and intestines, causing bloating. Bloating is often associated with abdominal pain, ranging from mild and dull to sharp and intense. The pain may be relieved by passing gas or a bowel motion. Carolyn s Tip Regular exercise and a healthy diet can go a long way in helping relieve ongoing symptoms of an upset stomach. About one in 10 Australians, mainly women, has the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome, such as abdominal pain, bloating and an altered bowel habit. To help reduce excess gas and bloating, you can: avoid triggers, which can include drinking through straws, smoking, chewing gum, fizzy beverages, fatty foods, beans, peas, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, bananas, onion and wholewheat bread eat slowly exercise regularly For dairy or lactose concerns, take an over-thecounter product that aids digestion or contains simethicone which dissipates bubbles in gas. If you re unsure what s causing your tummy troubles, or if symptoms persist, consult your doctor for a diagnosis and appropriate treatment. 6 What do I need for my trip overseas? Every year, nearly a third of all Australians make a trip overseas. While the vast majority of journeys occur without incident, it s wise to be well prepared. Here we address some of the most common concerns to ensure you have the best trip possible. Check whether vaccinations are required for the country you are visiting. If anti-malarial medication is required, follow the prescribed treatment. Be sure to pack all medications you take regularly, and leave it in its packaging to minimise customs issues. You may need to ask your doctor to prescribe extra doses of medication to make sure you have enough for your trip. Check your insurance coverage. Pack sunscreen and apply regularly. If you are prone to motion sickness, keep in mind that most motion sickness pills need to be taken prior to travel. Travelling can be tiring. Consider taking a supplement that can help boost your energy. Be sure to stay well hydrated before and during your flight a long haul flight in dry cabin conditions is equivalent to 13 hours in a desert! If travelling to a country with poor sanitation, be sure to take extra precautions to avoid a tummy bug remember Boil it, cook it, peel it. Travellers diarrhoea is the most common illness for travellers. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor about the best way to avoid a tummy bug. For travel advice and the latest updates, visit the Australian Government for Travellers website at smarttraveller.gov.au Is my acne caused by diet? Many factors contribute to acne, including hormones and genetics. A skin condition that involves mild to severe outbreaks of pimples and cysts, it s typically associated with puberty although it can persist into the 40s, especially in women. It occurs when the body produces too much oil and dead skin, which build up in hair follicles and create bacterial breeding grounds. So, diet doesn t cause acne, but it can worsen a preexisting condition. Researchers have found evidence that dairy products and carbohydrates with a high glycaemic index, such as white bread and sweets, will exacerbate it. However, it s a myth that chocolate or greasy foods can cause this skin condition. While acne sometimes requires medication, you can help treat it by using a gentle cleanser and an over-the-counter lotion to reduce excess oil. You should also avoid greasy cosmetics and hair products, touching your face with dirty hands, squeezing pimples or eating problematic foods. For more advice about acne, consult a dermatologist or your local Chemmart pharmacist. Diet doesn t cause acne, but it can worsen a pre-existing condition. 7 When should I consider using an anti-aging cream? The sun s ultraviolet radiation is a common cause of wrinkling and skin cancer. So, aim to reduce your sun exposure, Everyone ages differently, but after age 20, skin generally produces fewer dense fibres (collagen) and elastic fibres (elastin). This can lead to thinning, wrinkling and sagging. Happily, you can act to reduce the signs of ageing skin in several ways, starting from your 20s or 30s. Until you show visible signs of aging, you should look for products with preventive qualities, such as creams with antioxidants. Antioxidants are compounds that neutralise free radicals, which are substances in the body and the environment that damage cells. The sun s ultraviolet radiation is a common cause of wrinkling and skin cancer. So, aim to reduce your sun exposure, and apply sunscreen regularly. You can also buy daily moisturisers and foundations with a sun protection factor (SPF) rating. And if you currently smoke cigarettes, quit. In addition to the obvious health risks associated with smoking, this habit contributes to wrinkling, particularly around the mouth. For more advice on how to fight skin ageing, speak with a dermatologist or your local Chemmart pharmacist. THIS John Plunkett Protective Day Moisturiser 50g 12 13

8 Why are my eyes irritated? Carolyn s Tip There are so many different eye drops on the market. Don t rely on trial and error, chat with your local pharmacist about what will work best for you. How do I choose a sun care product? Eye irritation soreness, grittiness, dryness or watering is very common and very often caused by allergies, contact lens use or a condition called dry eye. Dry eye Dry eye occurs when fewer tears are produced, and symptoms include red, irritated, stinging or watery eyes. Its cause may be: advancing age; medicines like the contraceptive pill or antihistamines; medical conditions such as diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis; or environmental factors like wind, smoke and air conditioning. Allergy When the body comes into contact with an allergen, the immune system produces a chemical that can bind to the eyes, making them red, itchy and watery. Allergens that commonly affect eyes include pollen, dust, mould, grass and animal hair. Contact lens discomfort Contact lenses can be uncomfortable if your eyes are already dry, if they fit poorly or if they become contaminated with allergens. Symptoms include redness, irritation and dryness, watering, burning and impaired vision. Treatments for the symptoms of irritation include many types of eye drop. Speak with your local Chemmart pharmacist to find the right one for you. If you have more serious symptoms such as pink colouration, itching, yellowish discharge, excess tearing, crusting or swollen eyelids you may have conjunctivitis, and should consult a doctor or optometrist. 9 What should I do if I miss a dose of my medication? What to do can be very different depending on the type of medicine. Generally speaking, if you miss a dose of your medication, try not to panic and take it when you remember. If it s nearly time for your next dose, you can generally skip the one you missed and stick to your regular schedule. Don t take two doses to make up for the one you forgot and keep in mind, over-the-counter medicines are very different to prescription medicines. If you re uncertain, it s generally best to ask your local pharmacist or refer to the Consumer Medicine Information leaflet. If you are having trouble remembering to take medication, your Chemmart pharmacist can show you a great way to pre-package your medications to make it easier. What should I do if I have a bad reaction to medication? Human bodies are not identical, so a medication that works for one person might cause a different reaction in another. If you find yourself reacting badly to something you ve taken, it s important to respond quickly depending on the kind of symptoms you re having. If the reaction seems serious or even life threatening with symptoms such as wheezing, chest tightness, fever, itching, severe coughing, a blue skin colour, fits, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat have someone call an ambulance immediately. However, if the reaction appears less serious, talk to your local Chemmart pharmacist or doctor. They ll offer advice and update your patient profile, if necessary, to help reduce the risk of future reactions. Is a generic medicine the same as the original brand name? Yes, any generic alternative you are offered will be a bioequivalent of the one your doctor prescribed, with the same active ingredients in the same dose and strength. It will also meet the same government standards and efficacy as the original brand. Generic versions are made when a drug patent expires, which allows other manufacturers to use the same formulation to make a less expensive alternative.
