3 Why we re not eating to live but we re eating to die! Sugar has only been a problem for the past 50 years or so. It was once an expensive luxury which only rich people could afford. During the war it was rationed. That s why our grandparents were so slim. Then in the 1960s everything changed. It started, like most things do, in America when a clever food scientist discovered the solution to two problems: 1. What to do with a massive corn harvest. 2. How to make ready-made food more appealing in a way that was cheap. The corn was crushed into syrup which was then processed to produce a sweetener called fructose. It is 20 per cent sweeter than cane sugar and 30 per cent cheaper. Perfect for adding to everything from ketchup to burger buns, from processed meals to pizza toppings. Most of all, fructose is used in fizzy drinks like Coke and Pepsi. Since the days of the cavemen and women, we ve always had a bit of a sweet tooth. We re actually born with it so that we ll be naturally attracted to mother s milk. But for most of the past 50,000 years

4 we ve got our sweet tastes by eating fruit, nuts, grain and vegetables. Today that healthy option is still there, of course but society has become brainwashed by marketing into buying processed food which is convenient, fast and cheap. Look on most packets, tins or jars and you ll see the word fructose in the ingredients. A government survey in America discovered that nearly 80 per cent of processed food contained fructose or some other sugary sweetener such as sucrose, dextrose or lactose (just beware of anything that ends in -ose). Cavemen never had that problem! Sugar occurs naturally in fruit and vegetables, of course, but in smaller quantities. By eating only fruit and vegetables you d consume about 15 grams of it a day (that s less than four teaspoons). Added sugar is the real problem. In Britain, the National Diet and Nutrition Survey estimates we eat about 60 grams of added a day that s 15 teaspoons. Teenagers wolf down 74 grams a day over 19 teaspoons. I m going to tell you in another ebook exactly what sugar does to your health. It s not good. For now, you just need to know that doctors say too much sugar causes cancer, heart disease, diabetes, liver failure, obesity and a host of other life-threatening conditions.

5 How did the world ever let itself get into this crazy situation? We should be eating to live but instead we re dying to eat and what we re eating is killing us. When you understand what a perfect and sophisticated machine the human body is, it becomes even more of a tragedy. It s in your genes - and then it s in your jeans! Mind and body working in perfect harmony to keep us healthy that s what was normal until the last 50 years. The way it works is so brilliantly clever than you ll be gobsmacked to discover what s going on inside you. It will also give you a blinding flash of inspiration, a light bulb moment when you ll see maybe for the first time that the secret to all your weight problems is there inside your mind. This is what happens when you eat something: your digestive system breaks down all kinds of food into a form of natural sugar called glucose, which is what your body needs for energy. This glucose is absorbed into your blood, giving you a higher blood sugar

6 level. You may have heard a doctor or a nurse talking about blood sugar when you went for a health check. When your blood sugar goes up to a healthy level after a meal, your brain tells a remarkable little organ called the pancreas to release the hormone insulin. Its job is to transport the glucose from your blood to your cells where it is used to provide energy. If there is more glucose than your body needs at that time, it is stored in your liver and muscles to be used later. So far so good. However, if you eat too much sugar or sugary food (or processed food which has added hidden sugar) then your blood-sugar level rises beyond a normal level. This causes a lot more insulin to be produced. Here s the bad news: when your insulin level is that high, your body doesn t use your stored fat for fuel. It decides to hold on to it and instead it burns the glucose in your blood stream to produce energy. Let me just say that again so the horrible truth can sink in: when you eat sugary food and you re producing extra insulin, you ll never be able to lose weight because your body is genetically programmed to hang on to your fat stores.

7 When the Fat Controller s full signal is blocked You ll see now how important it is for your body to keep your blood sugar level at the optimum healthy level. Fortunately it has an amazing automatic mechanism that maintains this balance by controlling your appetite. This is how it works. When you ve had enough food to meet your energy needs, your fat cells produce a hormone called leptin which sends this message to your brain: Whoa! Stop Eating! You re full, baby! The natural behaviour when we want to lose weight is to say Right I won t eat chocolate and I won t eat cake, biscuits or drink alcohol or fizzy drinks because I know they re bad. I ll count my calories and do some exercise. Doctors call leptin The Fat Controller because that s exactly what it s designed to do. Control fat. You may have met The Fat Controller in one of my other ebooks, The Real Secret of Weight Loss That Lasts. This is him... However, he has a big problem - because insulin blocks leptin which means The diet industry has been drumming that into everyone for more than 50 years. So people deprive themselves of their pleasures and cut their calories which means they try to eat a lot less. the full signal can t get through. Now you re in a vicious cycle. You ve eaten too much sugar so your body is producing extra insulin. But the message that you should stop eating is being blocked by that very same insulin. The problem is, deprivation doesn t work and here s So what happens? You carry on eating and you

8 produce still more insulin. Now the leptin has no chance of getting through to your brain to reduce your appetite. This is what s making you put on weight. The more sugar you eat, the more you want. Your body, controlled by your mind, goes into fat storage mode and unless you have a way of tapping into your brain and restoring the hormone balance, there s not a darned thing you can do about it. If the amount of fat you re carrying gets too high you can become totally resistant to leptin. And that s why obese people can t help themselves. There s no way they can eat less their hormones are doing the job Nature designed them to do and are actually encouraging them to eat more and more. Here s why fat always goes on around your middle If you thought it couldn t get much worse then you re wrong: I ve explained how insulin is produced when your blood sugar level gets too high. Well, when the level drops too low, the hormone cortisol is sent into action. One of its main jobs is to store as much fat as possible round your middle so it s as close as possible to your liver, which can then convert it to instant energy if you re chased by a lion or need to fight for your life in an emergency.

9 This rarely or never happens, of course, so that tummy just stays there. Getting bigger and bigger all the time. Sugar does a whole lot more to you than stop you from losing weight. In one of my other ebooks I explain how excess sugar consumption is also a major cause of stress because of the way it sets your hormones into turmoil. Once your natural balance is upset in this way, trying to lose weight by dieting actually makes the situation worse. In fact, dieting slows your body down and long-term makes 95 per cent of people put the weight back on - and more. SO HERE S WHAT I WANT YOU TO DO Stop beating yourself up about your size. Right now! Give me an honest answer: do your family love you any less for being a size 20 than they did when you were a size 14? Of course they don t they love you for the wonderful person on the inside, not the overweight person on the outside. So why do you keep beating yourself up every time a diet fails? I know how you feel (because I ve been there too): You re worried that you ll never feel attractive. You re scared to try to lose weight again because of years of failure. You cry because you fear you ll never feel good about yourself,

10 never feel confident, never feel in control of food. Never feel happy. Another big fear is your health. You might get diabetes (chances are, if you re over size 18 and pile in the sugar you re probably on the verge already). You re probably desperately worried you ll pass your food issues down to your children. You might even have nightmares about dying young because of the effect that extra weight is having on your heart. Here s the sad truth: Diets just make all these feelings worse because you know deep down inside that dieting isn t going to do the trick in the long term. You need to find a way to begin a new healthy lifestyle that s natural and instinctive. Something that puts you in control of sweet stuff. You need hope. You need inspiration.
