He was associated with the Department of Demography of Australian National University (ANU) for many decades. Caldwell s seminal work included documentation of the role of mother s education in fertility limitation and child mortality decline and the role of circumcision in inhibiting the spread of HIV/AIDS in Africa. He is known for his wealth flows theory, which relates demographic transition theory to changes in intergenerational transfers within the family. He has encouraged and mentored many young scholars from India and good number of them received doctorates from ANU under his able guidance. His anthropological demographic work on south India, particularly on marriage, fertility and contraception, received lot of research attention. He was president of the International Union for Scientific Study of Population (IUSSP) and recipient of United Nations Population Award. We pay our tribute to this doyen of Demography. 1.Wagman JA, Donta B, Ritter J, Naik DD, Nair S, Saggurti N, Raj A, Silverman JG. Therefore, it becomes imperative to focus on the demographic challenges that India has to combat within next few years rather than the coming decades. In this regard, the role of the government and the citizens of the country emerge strongly. India is facing major issues in the provision of basic necessities and providing a minimum standard of living to its growing population. All major problems faced in India like poverty, gender inequality, malnutrition and other social and cultural conflicts are linked with population either directly or indirectly. The contributions in this book capture different aspects of the demographic challenges and draw lessons from state and national level experiences on issues including population stabilization, infant and maternal health, education and gender equality and migration.

11 P A G E 1 1 Statistical Survey Design and Evaluating Impact by Tarun Kumar Roy, Rajib Acharya, Arun Kumar Roy Cambridge University Press, New Delhi This book describes two basic designs sampling designs and evaluation designs. In the first part, it details the theory and practical guidelines for application of a variety of sampling designs that can be used in a number of situations in such a way that is easy to comprehend by everyone irrespective of one s proficiency in statistics. In part two, the book gives equal emphasis in discussing various evaluation designs. In addition to their elaboration, it discusses how these designs may be used in different situations such as estimation of cause -effect relationship, allocation of units to achieve balance in treatment arms, or estimation of impact. Another important aspect covered in this book, is the issue of bias in a design, the sources of such biases and ways to overcome them. Finally, the book includes a chapter with a number of case studies from around the world in order to highlight application of the techniques discussed in the book. Main features: 1. The book proposes a new view of social science research and will appeal to those who are uncomfortable with 'soft' and 'hard' approaches 2. The book avoids rigorous mathematical treatments so readers can understand the material without having to wade through complex mathematical formulae 3. The book provides an in-depth treatment of statistical survey designs and evaluation designs for readers interested to acquire theoretical base for application of the two designs 4. An easy to use practical handbook for research practitioners Sr no WELCOME TO NEW LIFE MEMBERS OF IASSH Name Membership No. Id 1.
