Develop a mechanism that ensures family access to all available resources and information that is accurate, well-balanced, comprehensive, and conveyed in an unbiased manner. But where do we start?

Reviewed and mapped process Developed Driver Diagram Divided into workgroups Materials Accurate / Up to Date Process for dissemination Developed AIM Statements

JCIH Goals will take time to review and assess as a team. Collaborative Stakeholders must agree on definitions of terms and processes. Stakeholders must commit to the process of assessing using JCIH Recommendation and to the identified and taking next steps to achieving goals.

Lessons Learned

Marcia Fort, Au.D.,., CCC-A EHDI Coordinator NC Department of Health and Human Services

A Northern New England Regional Analysis Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont Pam Dawson, Executive Director of hear ME now Early Intervention Linda Hazard, Program Director VT EDHI 29

30 The Need for a Regional Approach Low Incidence disability under 200 identified annually in all three states Rural population Unmet Family Need: Access to consistent, nonbiased information Access to qualified providers Parent to parent support

A Collective Approach State Programs Families Early Interventionists Part C Coordinators Parent Volunteers hear ME now (Maine) EHDI Coordinator & Screening Director Nine East Networks (Vermont) State School for the Deaf (Maine only) State Hands & Voices Chapters Multisensory Intervention through Consultation and Education MICE (New Hampshire)

Technology to Collaborate over Distance 32 For Meetings: ZOOM video conferencing with screen sharing To Share Information: Google Drive MATERIALS JCIH Goals EDHI Parent Survey 1 State EDHI Month Flow Chart 1 Part C Indicator 1 "Data Timely Service Delivery" 2 Part C Process Roles and Responsibilities Part C Process Documents (binders, materials and processes informing family of hearing loss, audiological information, communication options, child/language development and resources upon diagnosis) State Special Ed Guidelines State EI Certificates & Endorsements 2, 3, 4, 7 2, 3, 4, 7 3, 4 3, 4 EI Competencies & Certifications Specific to Hearing Loss 3, 4

A Regional Gap Analysis Project Goals Conduct a gap analysis to identify the barriers in the Family Journey from newborn screening through early intervention enrollment Develop an outline for one or more collaborative improvement strategies 27

34 JCIH Goal 1, Recommendation 1.2 Goal: All Children who are D/HH and their Families have Access to Timely and Coordinated Entry into EI Programs Supported by a Data Management System Capable of Tracking Families an Children From Confirmation of Hearing loss to Enrollment in to EI Services Individual State Progress Ratings New Hampshire Vermont Maine Nothing in Place X Just Beginning X Making Good Progress Established Practice X Recommendation: Develop a mechanism that ensures family access to all available resources and information that is accurate, wellbalanced, comprehensive and conveyed in an unbiased manner Opportunity for Regional Collaboration Rating No Opportunity Significant Opportunity

Next Steps: A Collaborative Improvement Strategy 35 Regional Northern New England Website: General information on HL and links to existing national resources State Specific Resources: Housed on each state s Hands and Voices website (as well as existing state Part C websites) Social Media (parent to parent support): Maintained in collaboration with state Hands and Voices Chapters * first, develop a process/rubric for identifying resources that meet JCIH recommendation 1.2

Lessons Learned: Wilder Collaborative Inventory 2006 Useful, positive outcome: A much needed collaboration with a reasonable goal: useful joint website. Outcome will benefit many people and improve ongoing collaboration. Cross-section of participants, perspectives, systems: Has been helpful. It's unusual for all perspectives of the Early Intervention process to communicate so regularly. Multi State collaborative with a variety of agencies/families represented will ensure a balanced project. 27

Ways to Improve Meet in person: It seems most productive and effective when all parties meet in person, so any way to increase in-person attendance and participation would be great. (Rules for virtual meetings) How to represent stakeholder group, but acknowledge personal belief system 28

Thank You Pam Dawson, M.Ed Executive Director hear ME now. Linda Hazard, Ed.D Program Director VTEHDI 27

Kelly Hermanns, Au.D., MPH Early Hearing Detection and Intervention Coordinator Office of Chief of Staff GEORGIA S EXPERIENCE

Why? Conducting a long term follow-up study on children who are D/HH Outcome data suggests children who are D/HH in Georgia are not academically successful

A Collective Approach State Programs Families Interventionists and Auxiliary Part C Coordinator & Provider Relations Manager Hands & Voices GA Pathway to Language and Literacy Coordinator SKI-HI Coordinator & Program Manager Guide By Your Side Atlanta Speech School EHDI Coordinator & Screening Director DPH Family Engagement Coordinator Auditory Verbal Center

Process Established and agreed to rating definitions Private self rating system (1) Nothing in Place The EHDI system has not yet begun to address this component (2) Just Beginning The EHDI system for this component is at an early stage or period (3) Making Good Progress The EHDI System for this component has made satisfactory development, growth, or advancement (4) Established Practice The EHDI System for this component conforms to accepted standards

Group Discussion Benefits Learned from another Collaboration opportunities Training Discovered additional agencies/programs working in tandem

Strategic Planning Averaged ratings submitted Wrote each goal with average score separately on easel sheet Two step selection Overall Goal Sub Goals

Results and Next Steps Results: Framework developed for the strategic plan for improving intervention systems of care for D/HH children Have baseline on Georgia s intervention systems Next Steps: Organize sub committees for each activity and start developing plans and activities to achieve goals

Lessons Learned Helpful to have all primary intervention stakeholders Regret not inviting additional intervention providers such as Children s Medical Services and external maternal and child health programs/providers Agree on the underlying objective for goals

Kelly Hermanns, Au.D., MPH EHDI Coordinator Office of Chief of Staff
