6 DCPC Mission The Division of Cancer Prevention and Control reduces the burden of cancer in the United States through Cancer prevention and reduction of risk for cancer Early detection of cancer Better treatment Improving the quality of life for cancer survivors

7 Programs, Initiatives, and Campaigns

8 Cancer Surveillance Cancer is the leading cause of death in the U.S. before age 85 Cancer Registry Amendment Act, 1992, authorized CDC to establish the National Program of Cancer Registries (NPCR) Cancer is the only reportable chronic disease and the only chronic disease for which we have national incidence data The goal of central cancer registries is to collect standardized data on all cancer diagnoses

9 Scope of CDC Cancer Surveillance Cancer Surveillance System Data on approximately 1.2 million new invasive cancer cases are submitted to CDC each year Includes data on approximately 13 million invasive cancer cases diagnosed during % coverage of U.S. population with NPCR 100% NPCR and NCI-SEER combined

11 Comprehensive Cancer Control Vision for Comprehensive Cancer Control Reducing the cancer burden through effective cancer control planning and program implementation at a local, state, tribal, territorial and national level by addressing the continuum of cancer care from prevention, early detection, treatment and survivorship

12 National Comprehensive Cancer Control (CCC) Program All 65 CCC plans identified colorectal cancer control as a priority 16 programs receive additional funds Focus on education and awareness

14 National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program (NBCCEDP) Provides breast and cervical cancer screening & diagnosis to poor, uninsured women Screening support in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, 4 US territories, and 13 American Indian/Alaska Native organizations Services include Clinical breast examination Mammograms Pap tests Diagnostic testing for women with abnormal results Surgical consultation Referrals to treatment

17 Funding Opportunity Announcement: Integrating Colorectal Cancer Screening Programs with Other Chronic Disease Programs Supports colorectal cancer screening for low-income, underinsured/uninsured men and women. Integrates colorectal cancer screening with other chronic disease programs. Two funding categories: Implementation of comprehensive CRC screening Surveillance of existing statewide CRC screening Awards planned for June 2009
