4 High Functioning Alcoholic or HFA Last year we highlighted the high functioning alcoholic As a review
5 High Functioning Alcoholic or HFA An HFA is someone that can maintain their outside life: Job Home Family Friendships All while drinking alcoholically
6 High Functioning Alcoholic Society does not view many HFAs as being alcoholic, because these individuals have succeeded and overachieved throughout their lives. These achievements often lead to an increase in personal denial as well as denial from colleagues and loved ones. HFAs are less apt to feel they need treatment for their alcoholism and often slide through the cracks of the healthcare system, both medically and psychologically, because they are not diagnosed.
7 High Functioning Alcoholic Some common characteristics of HFAs include but are not limited to the following: Denial They don t fit stereotypical image of an alcoholic so avoid help and make excuses and use alcohol as reward for stress Professional and Personal Life Is maintained but they include in their life other heavy drinkers Double Life On the outside they look normal, on the inside they compartmentalize their life Hitting Bottom Few tangible losses or consequences so they don t appear to be hitting their bottom
8 High Functioning Alcoholic This is information worthy of repeating Most if not all of us know or are related to a person who struggles with alcohol In addition, white collar drug addiction is also a wide spread issue

10 Prescription Drug Abuse Addiction starts with abuse. In 2011, 52 million people in the US over the age of 12 used prescription drugs non-medically at least once in their lifetime, 6.2 million in the past month. Abuse of prescription narcotic painkillers sit at the heart of the epidemic. Forty-five people die every day from opioid prescription painkillers more deaths than heroin and cocaine overdoses combined.
11 Prescription Drug Abuse Addiction is a chronic brain disease that causes compulsive drug seeking and use, despite harmful effects to the individual and others. Drug dependence is a complex disease process and the drug abuser cannot voluntarily stop their use of illicit or prescription drugs. Brain circuit changes may challenge an addicted person s self-control and hamper his or her ability to resist intense impulses to take drugs.
12 Prescription Drug Abuse Any opioid-based painkiller can lead to addiction. Opioid derivatives - or narcotics - are commonly used in prescription painkillers. Morphine, oxymorphone (Opana ER), Oxycodone (Oxycontin, Oxecta), Hydrocodone (Zohydro ER), Codeine, methadone, and fentanyl are examples of the potent opiate medications at the center of the U.S. addiction epidemic. Also concerning is that many of these medications (such as Lorcet, Tylenol with Codeine #3, Vicodin) may also contain acetaminophen, which in itself can be toxic to the liver at excessive doses.
13 Prescription Drug Abuse Use of an opiate can start with a simple prescription for a pain medication due to acute or in most cases, chronic pain. People who become addicted to drugs are not necessarily immoral or lacking in character; in fact, drug addiction occurs throughout the mainstream of society.
14 Prescription Drug Abuse Admission of addiction is the first step. It takes tremendous strength and courage to face an addiction head on. Reaching out for support is the second step.

16 Company Policy Mangan Inc. (the Company) is committed to providing a safe environment for all employees and contract staff. To achieve this goal the Company has adopted, in its entirety, the Substance Abuse Policy applicable to the office location or industry work. Office affiliated Drug and Alcohol programs are referenced in the Appendix of the Mangan Drug, Alcohol and Security Search Policy.
17 Company Policy Every new employee is trained on the requirements of the drug & alcohol program they fall under. All programs have the following in common: Illegal Drugs The use, sale or possession of illegal narcotics or drugs while on the job or on Company premises will result in immediate dismissal. Conviction for the illegal use, sale or possession of narcotics, drugs or controlled substances off duty or off Company premises also will result in dismissal. If you plead guilty or are convicted of a drug related crime, you will lose your job.
18 Company Policy Controlled Substances Each employee is required to read and be aware of the side effects that may be caused by over-thecounter or prescribed medications. If the medication has a listed side effect that may cause you to be impaired do not report to work until you are sure that you are not affected. If you should feel impaired at anytime while at work, regardless of the cause, be sure you report it to your supervisor.
19 Company Policy Alcohol Company employees may not consume or be under the influence of alcohol during working hours. Return to Work If an employee tests positive for either drugs or alcohol, he/she must fulfill all the conditions specified in the Return-to-Duty policy to regain Active status. In addition to the rehabilitation costs as outlined in the office or industry drug and alcohol program, the individual is also responsible for all follow up testing costs imposed as part of the return to work rehabilitation requirements.
20 Company Policy Firearms Employees are notified that when deemed necessary by circumstances or work place conditions, employees, their personal property, personal vehicles (while located on Company premises), work stations, desks, and lockers may be subject to reasonable search with or without notice. The use, possession, transportation, or sale of explosives, unauthorized flammable materials, firearms or other weapons while on Company premises or during working hours, is prohibited and could result in immediate dismissal.
21 Company Policy With specific reference to legal firearms, as permitted by the laws of the state concerning each office and independent of each other, are permitted in a personal vehicle. However, such storage of legal firearms is exclusive to anywhere outside of the employee s vehicle while on company property. At no time are legal firearms permitted in company vehicles, company rental vehicles, on vendor property, and on client property, even if issued legally and stored legally inside an employee s vehicle. 22 Common Among Mangan and Client Policies If you test positive for a drug that is consumed and is not your prescription, it is considered a positive result.
23 Common Among Mangan and Client Policies Medical Marijuana is not considered a legal prescription drug under the company and client s programs. If you are taking medication prescribed from a doctor or pharmacy out of country and it appears on your drug screen, the Medical Review Office (MRO) will accept confirmation of the prescription one time only. If the use of the medication is to continue, it will need to come from a prescription prescribed by a US pharmacy or physician to be excused a second time.
24 Common Among Mangan and Client Policies Use of Prescription Medications, Including Old Prescriptions Legal drug use, as reflected by a verified prescription, results in a verified negative by the medical review officer (MRO). Although a drug test may be verified negative by the MRO for use of a prescription drug, the MRO shall report to the Company any safety concerns in prescription drug use, or when the employee has a medically disqualifying condition. All prescription drug use shall be under the contemporaneous supervision of a treating physician. If any prescription drug being used was obtained more than two years ago, follow-up with a treating physician is required, and a substance abuse evaluation may be required.
