1 SAFI NUTRITION OUTREACH AND EDUCATION PROGRAM Title Food Groups and Functions Target Audience Elementary aged children Terminal Objective Students will be able to explain the importance of eating foods from every food group and how each food group benefits the body in a different way. Terminal Concept Malawian families don t understand the importance of eating foods from all of the food groups. It is possible to improve nutrition and health by learning about Choose My Plate and how each food group benefits the body in different ways. How many know what is a nutrient? Last time we talked about Choose My Plate and variety in the diet. What are the five food groups that are on Choose My Plate? Ask the students to identify the colors and or labels of each section. Food is made up of nutrients. Foods have been put into groups because each food group has a different set of nutrients. Each set of nutrients helps you stay healthy in a different way. That is why eating foods from all the food groups are important. Students will be able to list nutrients and respective functions that are found in fruits and vegetables. 2.1 Fruits and vegetables are good sources of fiber, vitamin C, and carotenoids or vitamin A. 2.2 Fruits and vegetables help keep your digestive tract healthy with a nutrient called fiber. 2.3 Vitamin C is very good at helping your body fight sickness and disease. It also helps your cuts and wounds heal, and help bone and teeth maintain their strength. Leafy greens, oranges, apples, and mangos have a lot of vitamin C and fiber. 2.4 Your body changes carotenoids into a nutrient called vitamin A. These are very important because they help you to have good vision, prevent night blindness, and fight sickness. Students will be able to list nutrients and respective functions that are found in protein foods. 3.1 Grains are important because they provide the body with energy, and help you work and play during the day. Wheat, rice, and corn are great sources of energy. 3.2 If you eat a lot of food from this food group and not enough of the other food groups, you will not be healthy. Corn found in nsima, for example, doesn t have a lot of the nutrients that are found in the fruit and vegetable, protein, and dairy food groups. It s very important to eat enough food from all the food groups, as shown on this poster, so you get all the nutrients you need to be healthy. 4.1 Meat, fish, poultry, eggs, beans, and groundnuts provide you with the nutrients protein, iron and vitamin B12. These foods help build muscles, skin, and blood. These foods also help your body prevent disease and sickness. 4.2 The foods that come from animals like eggs and meat are the best foods in this group. Your body is able to use the protein that comes from animal foods better than the protein that comes from plant foods. When you re trying to eat more foods from the protein group, try to eat more animal foods when you can. 4.3 When you don t eat enough protein foods, you are not able to grow or learn as well. Students will be able to list nutrients and respective functions that are found in dairy foods. protein foods when she s pregnant, it can prevent the baby s brain from growing. 5.1 Dairy foods are very important because they have the nutrients calcium and riboflavin. Calcium is important because it helps your bones grow when you re young, and prevents bone breakdown when you re old. It also helps your teeth be healthy and strong. 5.2 If you eat enough calcium throughout your life, but especially when you re young, your bones will stay strong through your life and when you re old. 5.3 Dairy foods also contain a nutrient called riboflavin. Riboflavin helps with skin strength, and helps your body change what you eat into energy. 5.4 Calcium and riboflavin are almost only found in dairy foods, so it is very important to eat these foods. Leafy greens however are also high calcium, but they are not as good as milk or cheese. If you cannot eat milk or cheese often, eat leafy greens like collard greens. Collard greens are especially high in calcium. Make sure to use My Plate so you know how many leafy greens and other vegetables you should be eating. 5.1 Tape pictures of bone and teeth on the blue section of Choose My Plate poster.
