1 Saudi Diabetes & Endocrine Association (SDEA) SDEA s Activities Report for the Period of January 1 st to June 20 th, 2017
2 1- Schools Screening Program Saudi Diabetes & Endocrine Association (SDEA) continued its second year (Phase 2) of Health Screening Program for the schools in Al Khobar City, Eastern Province of the kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The total schools screened in 2016 were 20 targeting 10,000 both genders, while for 2017 the number of screened schools increased to 48 schools for a target of 25,200 similarly. Elementary Schools Preparatory Schools High Schools Males Females Males Females Males Females 6 schools 5 schools 8 schools 10 Schools 9 schools 10 schools 3000 students 2400 students 4500 students 5200 students 4600 students 5500 students The Health Screening Program for males and females students included the following segments: Measuring the Body Mass Index (BMI) and identifying the levels of obesity and malnutrition among students Measuring of random blood sugar Measuring of blood pressure Conducting of health education campaigns Encouraging physical activities for students Encouraging healthy eating for students and introducing heathy canteens program Encouraging teachers and parents to adopt healthy lifestyle Following up for the obese students and enrolling them in weight management program Following up for the students who experienced high levels of blood sugar and blood pressure

5 2- Educational Program for Imam Abdulrahman Bin Faisal University Students Conducted three educational workshops in collaboration with Imam Abdulrahman Bin Faisal University in Dammam for their nutrition students on the following topics: Diabetes Nutrition and Carbohydrate Counting Feeding Diabetic Patients in the ICU Renal Nutrition for Diabetic Patients
6 3- Giving Hands Charitable Initiative SDEA in collaboration with the Ministry of Social Welfare conducted on June 6, 2017 a social and educational event called Giving Hands for supporting the needy diabetic patients and their families. Around 1500 diabetic patients attended the event and participated in its activities including educational lectures, nutrition exhibition, and presentations about diabetes in the young children and fasting Ramadan for diabetics, screening of blood sugar, blood pressure and BMI glucometers with their accessories were distributed to the patients with devices for measuring blood pressure, sport cards to join Gym centers free of charge, homes appliances, etc. The event was held at the Chamber of Commerce in Dammam city, Eastern Province of the kingdom.

8 4- Scientific Programs Participation in the Hot Topics in Pediatric Healthcare Symposium, of Imam Abdulrahman Bin Faisal University in Dammam which was conducted March 2 nd. A lecture on Pediatric Obesity was presented by Dr. Basem Futa, Head of HDN Club of SDEA. Its focus was on the importance of adoption of healthy dietary habits for children to lead healthy future and reduce their risks of several non-communicable diseases, including obesity and diabetes type 2. It highlighted the role of parents and teachers as role models. The Symposium was attended by 500 medical staff. At the same symposium SDEA established an educations booth for healthy versus unhealthy food; highlighting the contents of fat, carbohydrates and calories between them.
9 Participation in the Diabetes Education Course of King Saud University in Riyadh on February 27-28, 2017, presenting two lectures by Dr. Basem Futa, Head of HDN Club of SDEA on Diabetes Education Process and Diabetes Emergencies. The 50 attendees were from several regions of the kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
10 Participation in the Diabetes Management Course of Prince Sultan Medical City in Riyadh on March 17, 2017, presenting two lectures by Dr. Basem Futa, Head of HDN Club of SDEA on Diabetes and Heart Disease and Diabetes and Kidney Disease. The attendees were 300 medical staff. Participation in Kidney Disease Prevention and Management Symposium, April 15, 2017, Al Khobar City, Sofitel Hotel, in collaboration with Eithar Society and Saudi Center for Kidney Transplantation, attended by 250 medical staff. Both Dr. Kamil Salamah, Secretary General of SDEA and Dr. Basem Futa presented lectures in the Symposium.
11 Conducted an educational workshop on Kidney Disease and Obesity, in collaboration with Eithar Society and Imam Bin Abdulrahman Bin Faisal University in Dammam for the university medical students, attended by 150 students, date April 25, Participation in the Ministry of Health Symposium on Diabetes and Fasting Ramadan at Dammam Medical Complex, on May 18 th, 2017 attended by 300 medical staff. 5- Community Health Activities Conducted an intensive training program for the volunteers. The program is interactive and included many sessions aiming on improving their competencies in SDEA s professional activities. The sessions included various topics such as obesity, nutrition, exercise, diabetes, population health and activities related to combating diabetes and obesity among children and adults.
12 Participation in an Educational and Awareness Campaign on Organ Donation in collaboration with Eithar Society and Saihat Society for Social Services, attended by 4000 citizens, during the period of February 5-11, 2017, at Al Rashid Mall in Al Khobar city. Conducted Diabetes Education Campaign, in Al Rashid Mall in Al Khobar city, and distributed 500 glucometers with their accessories to diabetic people, date February 14, 2017.
13 SDEA in collaboration with the Dental College of Imam Bin Abdulrahman Bin Faial in Dammam city conducted on February 11, 2017 an educational as well as a recreational program for 300 diabetic children, members of the Sweets Smile Club dedicated for the Type 1 Diabetic children. The event included measurement of blood sugar, dental checking, nutrition exhibition and educational games. Dr. Kamil Salamah, Dr. Najla Al Jassas Club Coordinator, and Dr. Basem Futa presented three lectures. Another educational campaign to combat diabetes was held on February 14 th at the university attended by several hundred of medical students.
14 Participation in an Educational Campaign on Diabetes and Health in collaboration with King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam city, attended by 1000 citizens, during February 22-23, Participation in Emdad Educational Campaign in collaboration with Joud Charitable Society and conducted an educational campaign and provided 400 glucometers and their accessories to the needy diabetic people, date February 25, 2017.
15 On March 10, 2017 SDEA conducted an educational event for Saudi Retirees, males and females in collaboration with the National Society of Saudi Retirees, attended by 200 members. The event was held at the Chamber of Commerce in Dammam city, and included measurements of BMI, blood sugar, blood pressure, nutrition exhibition and two lectures presented by Dr. Kamil Salamah and Dr. Basem Futa. Participation in the Marathon event in collaboration with Excellence University in Al Khobar city, for female students by establishing an educational nutrition booth and measuring the BMI, blood sugar and blood pressure for 1000 female students, date March 18, Participation in Antismoking Educational Campaign in Riyadh city, Girnatah Mall, in collaboration with Antismoking Society in Riyadh, by establishing an educational booth, attended by 500 citizens, date March 30, 2017.
16 Conducted a Walking for Health event of the Walking Club of SDEA at Al Khobar Corniche on March 18, 2017, where 1000 members participated. Celebrated the occasions of the World Cancer Day on February 4th and World Kidney Day of March 12th. Published educational articles and delivered health messages to patients and community on various topics related to cancer and kidney health, such as proper nutrition, avoidance of smoking (active or passive), losing of excess weight for obese individuals, being salt-sat/trans-fat and sugar cautious, consuming fruits, vegetables, lean protein, low fat/non-fat dairy products, whole grains, and healthy oils, checking blood sugar and pressure and controlling them, performing regular medical checkups, drinking adequate amount of water and fighting infection.
17 Developed 30 health educational messages for Fasting Ramadan for diabetes people and posted them on SDEA s website and social media sites. The messages addressed diabetes awareness, healthy eating, blood sugar facts, hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia prevention and management, heart health, exercise, safety, environment, safe traveling and driving for diabetics. Developed a set of educational materials on weight management in both English and Arabic that included tips on healthy shopping, healthy cooking, smart and healthy substitution, food portioning, healthy recipes, and tips for dining out and during parties, caloric counting and exercise. Other publications were about Smoking and Diabetes and Diabetes and Kidney Health.
18 SDEA conducted several campaigns for blood donation at Al-Rashid Mall in AL Khobar city in collaboration with Eithar Society. The aim was to support the needy people for blood and create a culture of blood donation, where around 500 blood units were collected. The donors were provided with health, safety and nutrition guidelines that are related to blood donation and presented the benefits of blood donation for recipients and donors.
19 Conducted several health screening and educational programs for many companies, including; - Saudi Electricity Company, attended by 400 employees on May 17, Alzamil Industrial Company, attended by 1000 employees in two events: educational program on February 23, 2017 and health screening on April 21, 2017.
20 SDEA has screened several hundreds of sport clubs members for blood sugar, blood pressure and BMI during the sport season of May 2017 in Al Khobar and Dammam cities.
