2 INTERNATIONAL DIABETES FEDERATION MIDDLE EAST AND NORTH AFRICA (MENA) (IDF/MENA REGION) January 2012 Vol: 1 Issue: 3 WORLD DIABETES DAY SPECIAL ISSUE WDD 2011: ACT ON DIABETES NOW. World Diabetes Day (WDD) is celebrated every year on November 14. The World Diabetes Day campaign is led by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and its member associations. It engages million of people worldwide in diabetes advocacy and awareness. World Diabetes Day was created in 1991 by the International Diabetes Federation and the World Health Organization in response to growing concerns about the escalating health threat that diabetes now poses. QATAR DIABETES ASSOCATION Qatar Diabetes Association (QDA) started its celebration of World Diabetes Day, which occurs Nov. 14 of each year. During this month, QDA is holding various activities and seminars in all over the country to identify Diabetes, its complications and risks, as well as emphasis the importance of awareness and health education, among people who already have diabetes and the ones who are at risk. In this regard, QDA is holding seminars and training workshops to the staff of the health sector, it will also distribute posters to the health centers as well as other governmental and private organizations in the state of Qatar. QDA is also organizing a walkathon on the Corniche on November 18, 2011 from 3:00 to 6:00 pm, to encourage the Qatari society to follow a healthy lifestyle in order to avoid the complications of diabetes. In celebration of World Diabetes Day, QDA s Building was light in blue to participate important architectural landmark Qatar will be all lighted in blue. Hence it appeals all authorities with remarkable buildings to participate with us in lighting their buildings in blue to celebrate World Diabetes Day. In this context, Dr. Abdullah Al-Hamaq emphasized that, QDA used to celebrate this event since it was established, through holding a seminar compatible with the theme of World Diabetes Day, which this year carries the title " Act on Diabetes. 4 - Building in blue: Tornado tower and Museum of Islamic Art (MIA) on 14 th November - Diabetes walkathon on 18 th November - An open fun day at Katara on 25 th Nov - A Diabetes friendly healthy program at Sheraton Hotel and Millennium for a week starting from 14 th 21 st Nov - A Diabetes friendly healthy menu on Qatar Airways - Diabetes chat on TV & Radio - Diabetes articles on newspaper (English & Arabic An ambitious project, called Action on Diabetes, has been launched in Qatar. According to the latest figures, more than 200,000 people have diabetes in Qatar which has one of the highest prevalent rates 20.2% of the population of the disease in the region. Diabetes poses a serious challenge to the health of the nation as up to 10% of the country s total healthcare budget is being spent on diabetes care. A partnership agreement has been signed between the Supreme Council of Health (SCH), Hamad Medical Corporation, Qatar Diabetes Association (QDA), Maersk Oil and world leader in diabetes care Novo Nordisk to deal with the disease at a programme in Doha. The Action on Diabetes plan has been initiated by Maersk Oil. It will implement a programme to support Qatari authorities in raising awareness of diabetes, highlighting its causes, symptoms and management.

6 IRANIAN DIABETES SOCIETY Iranian Diabetes Society (IDS) celebrates World Diabetes Day every year in Iran. This year instead of World Diabetes Day we hold World Diabetes Week with the collaboration of Ministry of Health, Treatment and Education of Medicine, Ministry of Education, Municipality of Tehran, Iranian Endocrine and Metabolism Association. We had wide spread activities during this week regarding to the IDF recommendations. Some of our main activities on the occasion of WDD were as following: Lighting Azadi Squre (the most famous square in Iran) and Milad Tower (the tallest structer in Iran) in blue. - Holding press interviews with different newspapers, Radio, TV networks. - Holding World Diabetes Day Seminar in Shahib Beheshti Medical University in Tehran. - Holding several one day seminars on prevention of diabetes for publics in different cultural centers of Tehran. - Holding t symbolic walk and cycle rides in Melat Park of Tehran. - Forming blue circles by diabetics covering T-shirts with logo of Unite for diabetes in Melat Park and Mosta Khominie Park of Tehran. - Installation of WDD billboards in different parts of Tehran. - Performing free blood glucose screening in different parks and cultural centers of Tehran. - Holding one-day seminar on prevention of obesity and diabetes in different schools of Tehran - Forming blue circules by diabetics covering T-shirts with logo of Unite for diabetes in Melat Park and Mosta Khominie Park of Tehran. - Installation of WDD billboards in different parts of Tehran - Performing free blood glucose screening in different parks and cultural centers of Tehran. - Holding one-day seminar on prevention of obesity and diabetes in different schools of Tehran - Performing Diabetes in Picture competition for diabetic kids. - Translation of IDF poster in Farsi and preparing 1500 issues of it and putting them in the bulletin board of educational and research centers, hospitals, Pharmacies, schools, universities, train and subway stations, airport and public places. (This poster is enclosed.) - Translation of IDF leaflet in Farsi (5000 issues) - Translation of IDF Fact Sheets and distributing them between different Iranian newspapers and magazines.

9 SYRIAN DIABETES ASSOCIATION In light of World Diabetes Day, the Syrian diabetes association held a seminar about diabetes in cooperation with the Syrian International Private University. The Syrian diabetes association participated in the IDF exhibition in Dubai. The Syrian diabetes association publishes 2 periodical magazines, one for doctors and one for people with diabetes. The Syrian diabetes association issued the diabetes scientific guide in Syria.
10 OMAN DIABETES ASSOCIATION Under the auspices of the Minister of Health Dr. Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Obaid al Sa'eedi, the ODA organized the World Diabetes Day in 24th of November 2011 at AL Qurm Garden from 4:00 pm to 11:00pm. We (ODA) organized various health programs to enhance patient awareness about diabetes. To enter the WDD was free for all visitors and more than 2000 people visit this event. ODA organize marathon and cycling to encourage people to do exercise during their days. Also, we distributed healthy foods and juci for free. We distributed notes about diabetes and we offered some games for children. We organized some lectures about diabetes, some plays and press conference. An addition, we invited some companies which is concern in diabetes to attend this day and they did some examination for the visitors. This event was attended by Honorary President of ODA Sayyid Taimur bin Asad bin Tariq and VIP from ministry of health.

12 SAUDI DIABETES & ENDOCRINE ASSOCIATION The SDEA has planned the celebration from the beginning of 2011 and started that early of the year, where the activities included the following: - Activities to medical staff: Many conferences, symposiums and workshops were conducted on the occasion, mainly the annual symposium of 2011, focusing on diabetes themes of the year. In addition, the SDEA communicated many diabetes prevention messages and shared guidelines with the local hospitals and clinics. Activities for students: many educational programs were conducted for students at different levels, included their parents & teachers. They were encouraged to adopt healthy lifestyle, exercise and consume healthy foods. These activities were coordinated with the Ministry of Education. Activities for Businessmen: SDEA address many letters and conducted many meeting with businessmen encouraging them to support the SDEA activities, encouraging their employees to adopt diabetes & obesity prevention measure and to invest in healthy foods and sport business. Activities for Companies: many site visits were done to governmental and non- governmental companies to screen their employees against diabetes and to measure their BMI and enroll them diabetes & obesity prevention programs. Coordinated activities with media: SDEA conducted many media coverage events (written, electronic, radio, TV) addressing the importance of educating the community in regards diabetes risks, diabetes prevention, environmental health, healthy eating, exercise etc. Development of educational tools: The SDEA develop many educational tools and techniques for this occasion, such as posters, banners, CDs, leaflets, etc. and distributed these to hospitals, sport clubs, companies, schools, local societies etc.
13 S A U D I D I A B E T E S and E N D O C R I N E A S S O C I A T I O N Development of educational tools: The SDEA develop many educational tools and techniques for this occasion, such as posters, banners, CDs, leaflets, etc. and distributed these to hospitals, sport clubs, companies, schools, local societies etc. The activities are ongoing and include: Establishment of mobile educational unit to educate the local community, covering malls, shopping centers, etc. in various cities of Eastern Province of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Establishment of educational for children in a form of educational stories and games. Upgrading the SDEA website. Establishment of SDEA Facebook Page. Establishment of diabetic patients friendship program. Establishment of mobile educational exhibit for schools. The 2011 celebration themes focus on the following: Encouragement of community to adopt healthy lifestyle and consuming healthy meals. Screening for diabetes and enrollment of the people at risk in prevention programs. Investment in education for all the community members and getting the support from the decision makers. Improving the quality of life for diabetic patients. Establishment of foot care clinics and foot care programs for diabetic patients. The above activities have been integrated with all the concern parties to increase the awareness of diabetes risk factors, diabetes prevention, obesity management, healthy eating, environment health, etc. in order to achieve the set objectives for the World Diabetes Day of 2011 in a collaborative manner.

17 LEBANESE DIABETES SOCIETY On the occasion of the world diabetes day 2011 the Lebanese diabetes society under the patronage of the ministry of public health and in collaboration with the WHO (Lebanon) and non-governmental organizations and other establishments conducted a series of events and workshops during which the national diabetes plan was launched during the month of November in different Lebanese areas, educational materials was distributed. You will find below pictures of the 10 activities conducted by different Lebanese endocrinologists highlighting this year's IDF slogan: "ACT ON DIABETES.
18 DIABETIC ASSOCIATION OF PAKISTAN Brief report of World Diabetes Day activities by: Diabetic Association of Pakistan Diabetic Association of Pakistan celebrated World Diabetes Day on November 13, Scientific Sessions for doctors, allied health professionals, people with diabetes and their relatives were held at different Universities, Medical Colleges, Diabetes Care Centres, Schools and Colleges. The World Diabetes Day activities were given coverage by the print and electronic media. Other activities were: Diabetes awareness programmes by leading experts. Diabetes Facts Promos on different Television and radio channels. Diabetes walk was held on the World Diabetes Day. Monument Lighting at different places in blue. Diabetes branded Billboards in different places. Tent cards with messages about WDD in leading Hotels & restaurants. Patient Awareness Programmes using Diabetes Conversation maps by Diabetes Nurse Educators. Blood Glucose Screening Camps involving Diabetes Nurse Educators.
