3 ECTAS 2017 Thoracic Anaesthesia Panels and Workshop Cairo, 9-11 February, 2017 Overview: Currently, the technical advances in thoracic surgery particularly minimally invasive surgery requires rapid recovery of patients. Thus, there are several unanswered questions to be addressed in terms of the need for one lung ventilation, acute lung injury after thoracic surgery, protective one lung ventilation, correlation between cerebral oxygenation and cognitive recovery during onelung ventilation, and awake or nonintubated thoracic surgery as an alternative potential. There is a need to figure out where does evidence stand in respect of these unsolved issues to reach for a consensus about the standardised care of thoracic surgery patients particularly for the donors of lung transplantation. As thoracic anaesthesiologists, efforts must be exerted for the optimum care for patients undergoing minimally invasive interventional procedures and to minimise the need for ICU admission after thoracic surgery, particularly in the era of Enhanced Recovery after Surgery. Finally, airway management in thoracic surgery population extend beyond challenges in using a certain device or skilled operator to include several logistic issues. The ECTAS Thoracic Anaesthesia Panels will focus on addressing these existent concerns. The ECTAS Thoracic Anaesthesia Workshop is structured around the different tricks and trips for proper lung isolation in the operative theatres and critical care units including hands on practice to gain the needed skills. Venue: Cairo, the capital of Egypt, is the largest in the Middle East and the Arab world, and 15th-largest in the world, and is associated with Ancient Egypt, as the famous Giza pyramid complex and the ancient city of Memphis are in its geographical area. Purpose and Structure: The ECTAS Thoracic Anaesthesia Panels and Workshop include mini-lectures, interactive casebased discussion and manikin-based skill hands-on training. All activities will be in English language. The purpose of the ECTAS Thoracic Anaesthesia Panels and Workshop is evidence-based centred to provide participants with knowledge and to enhance their skills on one lung ventilation, lung transplantation and airway management for thoracic patients. All candidates should attend the whole course lectures and skill stations to fulfill the requirements for the accredited certificate. Objectives: The ECTAS Thoracic Anaesthesia Panels and Workshop aims to develop a cadre of well-trained, experienced clinical practitioners whose expertise will foster better safe clinical performance into everyday practice in thoracic anaesthesia suits and in the critical care units. To train the anaesthetists, thoracic surgeons and intensivists, on the skills needed for one lung ventilation, difficult airway management and perioperative care for interventional bronchoscopy and lung transplantation.
