1 Women s Health at Risk A report on the status of women s health in New Jersey May 2015
2 New Jersey Women s Reproductive Health Overview As more New Jersey residents gained access to insurance through the Affordable Care Act (ACA), 2014 marked the beginning of many great strides for women s health care. Within the first year of open enrollment, 161,775 New Jersey residents were able to select health insurance plans through the Marketplace, and 53% of those residents were women. 1 Over 29 million women in the US, and 869,000 women in NJ are now able to receive expanded preventive services with no co-pay, including birth control, cancer screenings, and annual well-woman exams. 2 Although the Affordable Care Act has created additional coverage opportunities for women, it is estimated that 693,000 New Jersey residents will remain uninsured, and 1.1 million women are in need of contraceptive services and supplies. 3,4 While the Affordable Care Act has proven beneficial for NJ women, the need for reproductive and other preventive health care is still a concern for many NJ residents. This report provides an overview of the status of women s health in NJ, which demonstrates that there is still a demand for basic, preventive health care in the state. Planned Parenthood is working not only to protect access to quality, affordable health care for our patients, but also to expand access to comprehensive health care, including reproductive care, to all NJ residents. 1

It is estimated that 1,103,770 women in Women (age 13-44) New Jersey are in need of contraceptive in need of contraceptive services services and supplies. 13 In 2010, Governor and supplies 13 Chris Christie cut $7.4 million in funding for family planning services in New Jersey. Four years later that is over $30 million 1,103,770 critically needed to keep New Jersey families healthy. This investment not only helps women access contraceptive services, but also helps them avoid sexually transmitted infections, cervical cancer, and unintended pregnancies. *Chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis **Breast and cervical cancer cases combined from New Jersey Cancer Registry 2
4 Spotlight: Health Disparities The U.S. Census Bureau estimates that in New Jersey, 18% of women are Hispanic/Latina and 13% of women are Black. 14 However, women of color represent a disproportionate number of New Jersey residents suffering from lack of access to health care. In New Jersey, it is estimated that 167,490 Black women, and 232,400 Hispanic/Latino women are in need of contraceptive services and supplies, and minority women suffer disproportionately from HIV/AIDS. 15 Ensuring high-quality health care means eliminating obstacles blocking health care access and treatment, and proactively seeking to ensure that all women have access to medical care and the information they need.
