1 A Guide to Mental Disorders Objectives 1. Identify at least 5 mental illnesses. 2. Describe the warning signs of various mental illnesses. 3. Share ways to promote mental health.
2 Affective Disorders *These are disorders involving moods that are extreme *The cause of these disorders is not known, but they tend to run in families
3 Clinical Depression *Includes long-lasting feelings of hopelessness, sadness, and helplessness General Symptoms: *sleep disturbances *apathy *morbid thoughts *fatigue *feelings of worthlessness *agitation *lack of concentration *deep sadness *weight or appetite change
4 Bipolar or Manic Depressive Disorder *A person s mood varies from extreme happiness to depression Manic Phase may experience great joy for no reason may be very talkative and restless Depressive Phase may be passive may have little energy may think of suicide
5 Seasonal Affective Disorder A type of depression that occurs when a person has reduced exposure to the sun Symptoms may include: Increased appetite Decreased physical activity Irritability General depression
6 Anxiety Disorders Consists of disorders which are real or imagined fears They may prevent a person from enjoying life Panic attacks may be suffered as a result
7 General Anxiety Disorder A recurring state of anxiety, fear and tenseness People with this disorder feel anxious most of the time No specific object or situation produces this fear

9 Panic Disorder Fear or anxiety prevails and gets in the way of functioning and enjoying life A person may experience panic attacks (feeling anxious, fearful, or upset)

11 Phobia An excessive fear of certain objects, situations, or people The fear is very real to them even though it is not realistic May be linked with past experiences Some phobias: height - acrophobia darkness - achluophobia dogs - cynophobia self - autophobia

13 Obsessive Compulsive Disorder The urgent need to repeat a thought or action obsession - thought compulsion - action They may repeat the action so often that they cannot attend to their other responsibilities

15 Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder The after effects of a past event keep a person from living in a normal way A person may have recurring dreams or nightmares
16 Dissociative Disorders?????????????????????? A person has memory loss, confused identity, or more then one identity??????????????????????
17 Amnesia Inability to recall past experiences May be a result of aging, injury, or illness Usually lasts a short period of time
18 Multiple Personality Disorder Two or more personalities coexist within the same person Is rare

20 Personality Disorders A person s patterns of thinking, feeling, and acting interfere with daily living.
21 Antisocial Personality Disorder When patterns of behavior are in conflict with society The person is often hateful, aggressive and irritable They may break the law and place others in danger
22 Avoidant Personality Disorder The person avoids all social contact The person fears rejection from others The person has negative selfesteem
23 Narcissistic Personality Disorder Person is boastful, conceited, and inconsiderate of others They believe they are better then others and occupied with their own wants and needs
24 Somatoform Disorders In a psychosomatic disorder, the person has symptoms of the disease, but no physical cause is found.
25 Hypochondria The person is always worried about illness Belief that one is physically sick when nothing is actually wrong

27 Conversion Disorder When a person experiences certain health changes as a result of emotional state
28 Schizophrenia Very serious mental illness Disorder in which there is a breakdown in logical thought process May experience hallucinations

30 Paranoid Schizophrenia person has delusions of either persecution or grandeur Persecution Grandeur belief that person thinks people are they are trying to get someone you great
31 Can Mental Disorders be Prevented? To some extent, YES!!!!! The best way to prevent mental disorders is to work constantly to improve your mental health
32 What are some ways to promote your mental health? Express your feelings Set realistic goals Recognize your strengths and weaknesses Accept your shortcomings Show respect for yourself and others
33 More ways to promote your mental health Maintain friendships Take good care of yourself by getting enough rest & maintaining a healthy diet Handle problems as they come up Be honest with yourself and others Avoid alcohol and other drugs Keep disappointments in perspective
