Being the Best Coach for Generation Y Athletes Presented by Bo Hanson Athlete Assessments Copyright 2010 a
PRESENTATION OUTLINE The Important Questions Principles for Coaching Generation Y Traditional and Athlete Centred Coaching Coaching Success Factors The Coach Athlete Relationship Summary Copyright
Question? What is your opinion, your inner dialogue, about today s swimmers? Copyright
Are you coaching your Swimmers the way you were coached? Copyright
What are the rules and philosophies which created your Coaching Style?
Quote The problems that exist in the world today cannot be solved by the level of thinking that created them. Albert Einstein Copyright
THE INFLUENCES ON GENERATION Y Copyright
COACHING GENERATION Y ATHLETES According to Jordan Kaplan, Associate Managerial Science Professor at Long Island University-Brooklyn, New York "Generation Y is much less likely to respond to the traditional command-and-control type of leadership " "They've grown up questioning their parents. Now they're questioning their Leaders (Coaches) They don't know how to sit quietly, which is great, but that's aggravating to the Baby Boomers who say, 'Do it and do it now. Copyright
COACHING GENERATION Y: THE FOUR C S Co-Operation My Coach asks me questions to increase my involvement and listens to my ideas Character My Coach shows me and assists me to develop character and life skills Competence My Coach is technically skilled and creates an effective training environment Communication My Coach uses two way communication to understand and know me Mcrindle Research Group Copyright
A Traditional Approach There s no crying in Baseball Swimming
TRADITIONAL COACHING Physiological Focus Traditional Coaching Style: Directive and Autocratic Technical Focus Misunderstanding athlete needs and limitations Directive One Way Communication What is Missing? Copyright
POOR RELATIONSHIPS COST COACHING CAREERS According to a questionnaire taken by 232 principals, they reported 104 coaches were dismissed during their tenure According to the results, the primary reasons for the firings was Poor relationships between the Coach and the Players Source: The Journal of Physical Education: Recreation & Dance Vol. 76, 2005 Coaches under pressure: Four decades of studies; the Odds against coaching longevity are increasing, but the reasons stay the same Copyright
POOR COMMUNICATION DESTROYS RELATIONSHIPS A survey of 68 Finnish coaches and their 400 athletes was conducted. The study showed that coaches' and athletes' rating of coaching behavior differed significantly Coaches evaluated themselves in a more positive way than their athletes did. These results indicate two key findings: 1. The coach-athlete relationship is emotional in tone 2. Only coaches who consider the opinions and feelings of their athletes have the best relationships Source: Coach-athlete relationship and coaching behavior in training sessions, author: Salminen Liukkonen Dept. of Social Psychology, Helsinki, Finland: International Journal of Sport Psychology Copyright
BREAKDOWNS RESULT In a study where high-level teenage athletes who had suffered from burnout were interviewed Poor communication was the leading factor of burnout. Poor Communication created a perceived low level of personal control over their sport in which they trained Poor communication left them feeling stressed and unable to cope Sporting environments marked by poor communication lead to perceptions of a controlling and pressuring structure Source: Sociology of Sport Journal, 9, , 1993 Copyright
