3 Introduction Sexual Harassment training is important to NCSC because allowing this type of behavior in the workplace is harmful to everyone. One important core value at NCSC is the worth of all employees ensuring that they are treated with respect and dignity. Engaging in, condoning, or not reporting sexual harassment are in direct conflict with our core values. 3
4 Introduction Sexual Harassment training provides an opportunity for NCSC to ensure that all employees are aware and are complying with Federal and State laws which prohibits sex discrimination. Also training is one way that helps to keep NCSC employees abreast of federal/state civil rights and fair employment laws. 4
5 Objectives of Training Define sexual harassment. State why it is important to prevent sexual harassment in the workplace. Describe NCSC policy and procedures for responding and reporting incidents of sexual harassment. Understand your responsibilities as it applies to NCSC policies and procedures. 5
6 Pre-Assessment Answer the following T/F questions regarding what you think you know about Sexual Harassment: If no one complains, then it s not sexual harassment. True False If my intentions were to compliment someone, then my conduct can t be sexual harassment. True False Quid pro quo harassment is when a female boss tells dirty jokes to other women in the office. True False If a delivery person makes sexual remarks to a staff person, there is very little an employer can do. True False If on the job an employee flirts with some coworkers and dresses in sexy clothes, both men and women may have a legitimate workplace harassment complaint. 8 Definition of Sexual Harassment? Unwelcome sexual advances. Requests for sexual favors. Other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature that affects an individuals employment, unreasonably interferes with his/her work performance, or creates an intimidating, hostile or offensive work environment 7
9 Types of Sexual Harassment Quid Pro Quo (Latin for this for that or something for something ) Hostile Work Environment 8
10 Quid Pro Quo Tangible employment action against the victim. Involves monetary loss or change in job. Example: Mary Smith receives smaller pay increase based on performance than other employees with similar performance because she refused to go out with her supervisor, John Doe. 9
11 Hostile Work Environment Speech or conduct that is severe and/or pervasive enough to create an abusive or hostile work environment. Example: Mike Maloney is leering (elevator eyes) at and intentionally brushing against Sally Davis. 10
12 Hostile Work Environment (cont d) In addition to speech and/or conduct, covers explicit or suggestive items displayed in the workplace that interfere with job performance or that create an abuse or hostile work environment Example: Jill Jones has a 9 x 12 calendar of nude males on her cubicle wall visible to passerby. 11
13 Types of People involved in Sexual Harassment Those who commit employees at all levels, customers, members of the same sex. Those who are targeted victims, bystanders, and in some cases, witnesses are affected by the harassment. 12
14 Sexual Harassment Compliance Compliance with Federal Civil Rights Act Title VII which prohibits sex discrimination. Compliance with similar federal/state civil rights laws and fair employment laws. NCSC EEO and Employment Policy: Treatment of Employees Illegal Harassment. 13
