1 International Journal of Innovative Pharmaceutical Sciences and Research STUDY ON VANGA BHASMA 1 Dr.Rajendraprasad ML*, 2 Dr. Shridhar K Lecturer, Dept. of rasashastra, Bapuji Ayurveda medical college,shimoga Abstract Rasashastra is a science which deals with minerals, metals and its therapeutic effects. Vanga is one such metal used extensively in the ayurvedic literature for the management of various diseases like prameha, klaibya, etc. Vanga was subjected to shodhana, jarana and marana to prepare vanga bhasma. Two different methods were taken to prepare vanga bhasma. In First method, Vanga is subjected to shodhana, Jarana and marana to prepare vanga bhasma. In second method, Vanga is subjected to shodhana and Marana to prepare vanga bhasma. Pharmaceutical and analytical studies were conducted during the process of preparation of vanga bhasma to know the changes during the preparation using these two methods. 2 INTRODUCTION Vanga is used extensively in the ayurvedic literature for the management of Prameha, Klaibya, etc. It is grouped under Putiloha. In Rasashastra texts, it is mentioned that, Vanga should be taken in the form of bhasma for the medicinal use. Administration of Ashuddha Vanga leads to many problems [1-3]. So Vanga should undergo Shodhana, Jarana and Marana to make it use as a medicine. To know the changes during the process of preparing Vanga bhasma and also to bring the genuine product this study is taken. Aims and Objectives To subject vanga for shodhana. To subject shodhitha vanga for maarana without jaarana. To subject shodhitha vanga for maarana after the process of jaarana. To conduct pharmaceutical and analytical study of vanga bhasma. MATERIALS AND METHODS Preparation of Vanga bhasma has been done in two different methods. 1 st method - Vanga shodhana Jarana Marana Vanga Bhasma. Shodhana [Ref-Rasaratna samuchchaya] Materials- Vanga, Iron pan, Nirgundi swarasa, Haridra churna, Pitara yantra. Vanga is taken in an iron pan and heated till it melts. Immediately it is poured in Nirgundi patra swarasa with the help of Pitara yantra. This procedure is repeated for three times to get purified Vanga. Jarana [Ref-Ayurveda prakasha] Materials- Shuddha vanga, Iron pan, Loha darvi, Chinchatwak churna. Shodhita vanga is taken in an iron pan and heated till it melts. Simultaneously Chinchatwak churna is added and rubbed using a Loha darvi until the vanga is completely converted to powder form. The procedure is done for 4-5 hours to get powdered vanga. Marana [Ref-Ayurveda prakasha] Materials- Jarita vanga, Khalva yantra, Kumari swarasa, Sharava. Jarita vanga is taken in a khalva yantra and mardana is done with kumari swarasa. Chakrikas were prepared and kept in sharava. After sandhibandhana it was subjected to kukkuta puta. Such 3 putas were given to prepare vanga bhasma. Available online: May Issue 979

4 2 nd method - Vanga shodhana Marana Vanga Bhasma. Shodhana [Ref-Rasaratna samuchchaya] Shodhana was done in same method as explained in first method. Marana [Ref- Rasaratna samuchchaya] Materials- Shuddha vanga, Shuddha haratala, Palashamula kwatha. Shuddha haratala is triturated with palasha mula kwatha and it is smeared over the shodhitha vanga. It is kept in sharava, sandhi bandhana is done, subjected to kukkuta puta. It is heated for about 1 minute and kept for 50 hours, shaking now and then. Then it is allowed to settle until a clear layer is formed. 10% potassium iodide solution is prepared. Watman s paper is dipped in the solution and allowed to dry. One drop of the solution of bhasma and 5NHNO3 is placed on the paper using a dropper. Available online: May Issue 983

8 DISCUSSION Considering the hardness of Vanga, it is subjected to vishesha shodhana without samanya shodhana. By observing the table(results) it is noticed that, Jaarita Vanga attained Bhasma lakshana s after 1 puta where as the one which was not subjected to Jaarana, took 3 puta s to attain Bhasma lakshana s. Since Chincha twak contains kshara guna, it was taken for jarana. By considering the hardness of vanga, 3 kukkuta putas was given in 2 nd method, as though number of putas is not mentioned in classics. Even after 3 putas, vanga bhasma of 2 nd method was not passed bhasma pareeksha. CONCLUSION Vanga bhasma prepared with Jaarana is comparatively better than the one prepared without subjecting it to Jaarana. If Jaarana is done, the number of Puta s can be reduced and consequently the time and fuel too. REFERENCES 1.
