Dr. Carol Fischer Receives NIH Clinical Loan Repayment Program Funding Dr. Carol Fischer, postdoctoral research fellow, Dows, has received a two-year funding contract from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Clinical Loan Repayment Program (LRP) of the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR). Dr. Fischer will continue working on her current research project, A Predictive Model of an Oral Inflammatory Response, which she outlined in her application. Dr. Kim Brogden, director, Dows, is Carol s mentor. Coinvestigators include Shireen Vali, Taher Abbasi, Prashant Nair, and Robinson Vidva from Cellworks Group, Inc., San Jose, California. Dr. Leonardo Marchini Receives Delta Dental of Iowa Foundation Grant Dr. Leonardo Marchini, Department of Preventive & Community Dentistry, has received a two-year, $166,440 Delta Dental of Iowa Foundation grant for his research, Iowa Nursing Facility Oral Hygiene Intervention: A Pilot Study. His research will evaluate the effectiveness of dental hygienist-delivered oral health interventions in six area Iowa nursing facilities. Co investigators will include Drs. Michael Kanellis, Clinic Administration; Jennifer Hartshorn, Howard Cowen, and Daniel Caplan, all Department of Preventive & Community Dentistry; Deborah Dawson, Biostatistics Unit; and David Drake, Dows Research. COD Alumna Appointed Director of the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion Dr. Katherine Weno, (DDS 91) has been appointed director of the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion s Division of Oral Health. Dr. Weno received her JD from Iowa in She was in private dental practice from From , she began her legal career as an attorney before providing legal aid to Health and Human Service s State Children s Health Insurance Program in Missouri. In 2006, Dr. Weno joined the Kansas health department. She has been a member of the Association of State and Territorial Dental Directors (ASTDD s) Board of Directors for two years and currently serves as treasurer of the organization. She mentors new state dental directors and oral health program staff in ASTDD s mentorship program. She is also chair of the ASTDD Leadership Committee.

Iowa State Fair Exhibit Features Large-as-Life Photos of UI Alumni Life-size photographs of recent University of Iowa graduates who are living and working in Iowa communities will be on display at the UI s exhibit during the Iowa State Fair, August 7-17 in Des Moines. The photos were taken by UI photographer Bill Adams and are part of the UI s for IOWA campaign to share stories of how the university provides Iowans with a world-class education, keeps families healthy, builds businesses, and makes life better through social and cultural outreach.
