DOW borohydride bleaching solutions are marketed under the trade names ACUBRIGHT, BOROL, CHROMACLEAR, and COLORCLEAR solutions. Worker exposure to these products is possible during manufacture, transport, or use. Occupational exposure is limited by engineering controls and personal protective equipment. Consumer contact is not likely. 4 For further details, see Exposure Potential. Sodium borohydride bleaching solutions are corrosive to the eyes and skin and contact could result in permanent injury. DOW borohydride bleaching products are completely soluble in water, but environmental testing is usually not feasible because sodium borohydride reacts with water. Sodium borohydride solutions can release flammable hydrogen gas upon contact with acids, oxidizing agents, and transition metals, or if diluted with large amounts of water. 2 Manufacture of Product 5 Location Dow manufactures sodium borohydride products at their facility in Elma, Washington (USA). Process DOW borohydride bleaching products are formulated using proprietary materials and technology. The process used to produce sodium borohydride (NaBH 4 ) is the well-known Schlesinger process involving reaction of sodium hydride with borate esters. Product Description 4 DOW borohydride bleaching products are a family of industrial brighteners based on sodium borohydride (NaBH 4 ). These products are marketed under the trade names ACUBRIGHT, BOROL, CHROMACLEAR, and COLORCLEAR solutions. DOW borohydride bleaching products are formulated as clear, colorless liquids and also contain sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and water. Product Uses 2,6 DOW borohydride bleaching products are used extensively as industrial bleaching agents in the following applications: Pulp processing (paper industry) Kaolin clay processing Textile industry Exposure Potential 4 DOW borohydride bleaching products are used for the production of industrial and consumer products. Based on the uses for these products, the public could be exposed through: Workplace exposure Exposure can occur either in facilities that manufacture DOW borohydride bleaching products or in the various industrial or manufacturing facilities that use these products. They are produced, distributed, stored, and consumed in closed systems. Those working with these products in manufacturing operations could be exposed during maintenance, sampling, testing, or other procedures. Each manufacturing facility should have a thorough training program for employees and appropriate work processes and safety equipment in place to limit exposure. See Health Information. Consumer exposure to DOW borohydride bleaching products DOW borohydride bleaching products are for commercial use only. Although consumer products such as paper goods and clothing may have been manufactured with borohydride bleaching solutions, it is not present in the finished product. See Health Information. Environmental releases Industrial spills or releases are infrequent and generally contained. If small quantities of these products are released into the environment, avoid all contact. Evacuate personnel to safe areas. Material is corrosive. If exposed to material during clean-up operations, immediately remove all contaminated clothing and wash exposed skin areas with soap and water. Keep spills and cleaning runoff out of municipal sewers and open bodies of water. Contain spills immediately with inert materials (e.g. sand, earth). Transfer liquids and solid diking material to separate suitable containers for recovery or disposal. If a large spill does occur, the material should be captured, collected, and reprocessed or disposed of according to applicable governmental requirements. 3 contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) with an approved full-face mask and a protective suit are recommended for emergency work. Because contact with water can release flammable hydrogen gas, eliminate all sources of ignition immediately. Use only explosion-proof equipment, and ground and bond all containers and handling equipment. See Environmental, Health, and Physical Hazard Information. In case of fire These products do not burn; however, exposure to extreme heat or large quantities of water may result in the release of flammable hydrogen gas. Use an extinguisher that is suitable for the surrounding material to fight the fire. Firefighters should wear positive pressure, self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) with a full-face mask and protective firefighting clothing. Contact may cause severe burns and permanent eye injury, even blindness. Skin contact Contact may cause burns and permanent skin damage. Inhalation Repeated or prolonged inhalation of product vapor or mist can cause severe irritation of the nose, throat, and lungs. May cause respiratory tract burns. Symptoms may include wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath, and tightness in the chest. Inhalation may cause delayed lung injury and burns. Environmental Information 2 DOW borohydride bleaching products are inorganic compounds and do not photodegrade and they are not expected to biodegrade. Borohydrides, the active ingredient in DOW bleaching products, will not accumulate in the food chain (low bioconcentration potential). These products are completely soluble in water, so most environmental testing is generally not feasible because the main component reacts with water. However, once these products react with water, they form a complex mixture of numerous boro-oxygen species, some of which are considered toxic to fish and aquatic organisms on an acute basis.
