10 Assignment #4 - Summary Instructions: You may choose any chapter to summarize from the novel. In one paragraph summarize the main events that occurred in the chapter in chronological order. Write your paragraph on loose leaf and hand in for marking. 12 Assignment #6 - Author s Purpose Instructions: Author s have a purpose for writing, they write to persuade, to inform, to entertain, or a combination of the three. Answer three of the following questions and discuss the overall author s purpose for the novel. (15 marks total) Ask yourself the following questions to help you identify the purpose of this novel: Did the author make you laugh? (Entertain) Did the author tell a story? 13 Assignment #7 - Essay Instructions: Choosing from one of the following topics, write an essay that chooses a clear stance on your topic. Write 3-5 paragraphs including an introduction and a conclusion paragraph that convey your ideas. Follow the writing process and hand in your pre-writing, your rough draft and your final draft of your essay. All drafts and pre-writing are to be completed on loose leaf paper. (25 marks) Topics: 1. Conflict and Change We humans tend to think of conflicts as negative, something to be avoided, and we often focus only on the negative consequences or changes that come with conflicts. However, conflicts can also lead to positive change. What are the most notable changes that have taken place in Parvana s life due to her family s conflicts with the Taliban soldiers and restrictions? Are these positive or negative changes? Focus on either the positive or negative changes in your essay. Supporting Evidence: Provide at least two examples of positive or negative changes from the novel Commentary: Explain why these two changes occurred and how they negatively/ positively impact the character or family. 2. Rebellion After Father tells the story of Malali, he assures his daughters, There are many types of battles. In the novel, many Afghans seek various forms of rebellion in order to survive and/ or maintain their human dignity in the face of the Taliban s restrictive rule and violence. Explain the different types of rebellion exhibited by the main characters of The Breadwinner as they struggle to survive under the Taliban government. Supporting Evidence: Make certain that you provide at least two specific examples from the book. Commentary: Explain why each of these examples is a form of rebellion and what is being rebelled against. 3. Desire vs. Duty Three characters experience a struggle between their desire for a new lifestyle or different place on the one hand and their sense of duty toward their family and/or country on the other. Select one of these characters and explain how she experiences this inner struggle. What does she desire? Why? To what does she feel a sense of duty and why? What choice does this character ultimately make? Supporting Evidence: Select one example that shows the character s desire and another that illustrates her duty. 13
