3 Summer Fatigue The effects of fatigue can be significant. Mental and physical fatigue is very closely intertwined and may be considered one and the same. The negative impact of mental fatigue can be seen in things like decision-making, perception, critical thinking, judgment and problem solving. Physical effects of fatigue can lead to decreased immunity, and vulnerability to a number of ailments including colds and flu, headaches, muscle weakness, low motivation and irritability. Fatigue can be amplified in the summer because of The longer days and shorter nights experienced in Northern areas affecting sleep Time off being used for activities such as summer sports, camping, watersports, and vacation trips People maximize their time off and use their return to work for recovery Potentially increased alcohol consumption on time off in some areas Reduced sleep due to the heat

4 Summer Fatigue Symptoms of Fatigue Concentration issues, drowsiness, daydreaming Not remembering last few miles driven, missing road signs Constant yawning, stretching Tired, sore, heavy eyes, eyes out of focus Drifting from your lane, variations in driving speed If You Have These Symptoms While Working or Driving: 1) Stop: Pullover or move to a safe location and call your supervisor 2) Revive/refresh: Have a minute nap if possible 3) Survive: Return to work if safe or advise your supervisor you cannot. If driving is required, continue driving only until you reach a place where you can have a proper sleep at an approved rest area 18 June

5 Summer Fatigue A simple two-step process can diminish negative consequences of fatigue: 1. Recognizing and acknowledging that fatigue is present. 2. Proactively adjusting decisions, actions and priorities to accommodate diminished capacity due to fatigue. If, for example, we sprain our ankle, we make decisions like wearing appropriate shoes or taking an elevator rather than stairs to adjust to our physical state. The same can be done to mitigate against the detriments of fatigue. Important decisions can be postponed, known stressors can be avoided, second opinions can be solicited and special assistance can be requested. Additionally you can: Get enough rest before working or driving Inform your Supervisor if you are taking medication that can influence your driving In essence, anyone can use intentionality, strategy and planning to diminish the negative effects of fatigue dramatically. Get ready to enjoy summer and stay energized, and don t let fatigue hold you back. Additional information on Fatigue management:

6 Summer Driving Driving Conditions Summer driving conditions vary by area. It is up to you to know what conditions you will be facing and how best to manage the conditions. Dust Clouds driving on dry dirt roads can cause a dust cloud. Following another vehicle too close can dramatically reduce visibility and put you at significant risk Heavy Rains some areas can experience severe storms with heavy rains. Risks might include reduced visibility or localized flooding in low-laying areas. Extreme Heat high heat is common in many areas during the summer. Dangers to health resulting from mechanical breakdown are a threat Actions Required Check air conditioners to make sure that they are in good order Check Windshield Wipers to make sure that they are in good order Regular mechanical maintenance is required on vehicles and should be verified Journey Management must be used where required Leave additional space on dirt roads when dust clouds are present to ensure visibility

7 Summer Working Conditions Summer weather varies from high heat to violent storms. Whether you are working at a camp, aviation terminal, at a field location, or in road transport you face an increased risk of: Dehydration Heat Stroke and heat exhaustion Violent storms (high winds, heavy rains) Wildlife encounters both driving and in the field So What Do We Do? Everyone needs to take responsibility for themselves as well as those around them: Make sure you go to work with plenty of water, and you can access more through the day Monitor yourself and those around you for heat stroke and heat exhaustion Know your thresholds for working in high winds or heavy rains. Stop work when needed. Take appropriate wildlife training: Bear Awareness or Driver Training and follow guidance Each and every team member needs to watch out for the SSE, help keep them safe If you see an unsafe condition you are expected to intervene Let s Keep Each Other Safe

8 Ramadan Awareness Ramadan: Holy month for Muslims Ramadan (also known as Ramadhan or Ramzan) is the ninth month in the Islamic calendar. It is a period of prayer, fasting, charity-giving and self-accountability for Muslims in Canada. Physical Aspects of Ramadan Refrain from food and drinks during fasting hours Fasting begins at the break of dawn and ends at sunset Hours depending on location an season: from 12 up to 17 hours Spiritual Aspect Refrain from blameworthy thoughts and acts Ramadan Begins Thursday, June 18, 2015 and ends Thursday, July 16 th, June

9 Ramadan Awareness Those who fast for Ramadan will not drink or eat for about 12-17hours This leads to serious dehydration and hunger issues Those who fast, tend to sleep short nights This can lead to fatigue and inevitable distraction and stress Traffic during Ramadan: Traffic is more aggressive especially close to break of fasting times Number of incidents increases (2008: +50%) in most Muslim countries Traffic increases due to seasonal factors 18 June

10 Ramadan Awareness: Safety If you feel tired or not well, safely STOP work and call your manager - Rest until you feel better Avoid driving close to sunset times Avoid working in direct sunlight where possible Avoid unnecessary work. Rest in a cool place as much as possible Avoid discussions with a smoker. Smokers tend to be more agitated due to lack of nicotine 18 June

11 Ramadan Awareness: Toolbox Meetings Start toolbox meetings 1-2 weeks prior to Ramadan on: Fatigue Sleep management Healthy nutrition during Ramadan Continue these meetings throughout Ramadan and ask questions: How were you yesterday? How do you feel today? Any incidents you had or witnessed? Incidents tend to increase to the end of Ramadan. A toolbox meeting after the first half of Ramadan is important Face to face communications and Management participation is valuable to increase awareness 18 June

12 Ramadan Awareness: Fitness to Work Review Fitness to Work of drivers/operators to check for health problems: Sleep apnoea High blood pressure Diabetics Hypothyroidism Those who have these problems can fast, but should see their doctor for the right medication in this period Give sleep management advice to drivers and staff in HSSE & SP critical positions Refresh fatigue awareness so drivers will identify symptoms Staying up late at night during Ramadan will result in insufficient sleep and accumulating sleep debt Involve family with leaflets (dietary requirements, healthy nutrition, fatigue) or organising contests for children 18 June
