3 What is Stress? Stress is your body's way of responding to any kind of demand or threat. When threatened, your nervous system releases the stress hormones, adrenaline and cortisol The Stress Response readies the body for emergency action (Fight, Flight or Freeze). The Stress Response is natural, chronic / prolonged stress can be harmful.. The Stress Response (Your body's way of responding to any kind of demand or threat)

4 Symptoms of Stress? Feel anxious, irritable or depressed Apathy (loss of interest) Problems sleeping Fatigue (multiple causes) Trouble concentrating Muscle tension or headaches Stomach problems Social withdrawal Loss of sex drive Using alcohol or drugs to cope Symptoms vary from person to person (Coping skills, methods and capacity)

5 What is Fatigue? Fatigue is also referred to as tiredness, exhaustion, lethargy, and listlessness. Fatigue can be a physical and / or mental state of being tired and weak. Although physical and mental fatigue are different, the two often exist together. If a person is physically exhausted for long enough, they will also be mentally tired. Physical and Mental Factors! (A state of being tired and weak)

6 Symptoms of Fatigue? Weakness / Lack of energy Constantly tired or exhausted Lack of motivation Difficulty concentrating Depression Un-refreshing sleep Muscle pain Tender lymph nodes Fainting or loss of consciousness Rapid heartbeat (palpitations) Dizziness or vertigo Difficulty starting and completing tasks Impaired memory or concentration Multi-joint pain without redness or swelling Sore throat and Headaches * It is advisable to seek the guidance of a health care professional to establish the underlying cause of chronic symptoms(s) [WebMD / emedicinehealth.com] Symptoms of an underlying disease or medical condition

7 BREATHE 4 Emotional intelligence: Self-awareness, Self-management and active relaxation, intentionally relax the body and the mind BREATHE. Know Yourself!

8 SLEEP Sleep: No laptops, phones, tablet-pc s televisions in your bedroom. Your Doctor can help if you have a sleep disorder. Too much coffee? (Caffeine can cause fatigue) Make sleep a priority

9 HEALTHY DIET Diet: Eating too little or the wrong foods can cause problems and fatigue. Eat good fats, reduce simple carbohydrates (Enjoy a well balanced and nutritious diet)

10 EXERCISE Exercise & Lifestyle: Healthy but tired adults can get a significant energy boost from a modest workout program. Moderate alcohol, avoid nicotine A Fast Fix for Mild Fatigue

11 Dehydration Dehydration: Sluggish, weak, dizzy, headache? If you're thirsty, you're already dehydrated!

12 Night Work (shift work) Shift / Night Work: Certain schedules may disrupt your internal clock. Solution: Limit your exposure to daylight when you need to rest. Make your room dark, quiet, and cool

13 Depression Depression: Often considered a emotional disorder, but may have physical symptoms. If fatigued for more than a few weeks, visit your Doctor. Ask for help and get support

14 Stress and Fatigue Reduction and Prevention Active relaxation Me time BREATHE! Healthy sleep. You NEED 7 to 9 hours to remain healthy Be mindful of what you eat, Think of Food as Medicine Exercise for energy. 30 minutes of moderate-intensity 5 times per week Enjoy an active Life-style Self-care, Emotional balance, Intimacy If in doubt or discomfort ask for help, see your Doctor! Take a pro-active approach
