3 Minnesota Has the largest Somali population in the United States Second Largest Hmong population St. Paul is home to the largest urban population of Hmong in the world Home to the largest population of Karen outside Southeast Asia

4 Minnesota The state s foreign-born population is increasing faster than the national average Among Minnesota children (age 0-4), nearly 1 in every 5 is a child of an immigrant The African American, Asian, and Hispanic/Latino populations are expected to more than double over the next 30 years

5 U of M School of Dentistry Established in 1888 Educates general dentists, dental hygienists, dental therapists, dental specialists, dental educators and dental researchers Nearly 80% of MN active dentists were U of M graduates

6 Project Goal To create academic-community partnerships that will improve the lives of underserved children

7 Project Objectives 1. Seek to diversify allied dental care providers to reflect the community of underserved children served Recruit URM students and faculty Focus on Minority Faculty development 2. Establish a continuum of comprehensive oral health care for underserved children by establishing a school-based program

8 Objective 1 Diversify Allied Dental Care Providers Recruit URM students and faculty Engaged URM students participating in the Summer Experience program Engaged minority students participating in the Saturday Academy program Engaged current minority SOD students as mentors for pre-professional college and high school students

9 Dental Summer School Experience A two-week, intensive program designed to enhance academic skills and to teach rising undergraduate Juniors and Seniors from disadvantaged backgrounds

10 Summer Dental School Experience Academic Partnership Underrepresented Communities.

11 Saturday Academy A collaboration with the Brian Coyle Center, serving East African immigrants in the Cedar - Riverside neighborhood in Minneapolis Twenty students enrolled 7 are still interested in a dental career 1 Wants to be a DT!

13 Objective 1 Diversify Allied Dental Care Providers Recruit URM students and faculty Focus on Minority Faculty development Hired a dental therapy (DT) faculty member on a permanent basis Created and formalized a professional development program for the new DT faculty member

16 Professional Development Program Consists of 5 Components: 1. Orientation -The Appointment/Position -The School of Dentistry -The University of Minnesota 2. Assignment of Mentor 3. Academic Career Planning Guide 4. Identification of Professional Development Activities 5. Identification of Available Resources

17 Professional Development Program Next Steps Grant funding for Professional development is currently being pursued Piloted professional development program distributed to other Divisions for implementation throughout the Department Strategic Planning Process Anticipate it will become a foundation for faculty development school-wide

18 Objective 2 Establish a continuum of comprehensive oral health care for underserved children by establishing a school-based program Created a community/academic partnership with Ready, Set, Smile (RSS) Increased access of low income, underserved children to comprehensive care (preventive, restorative, and specialty care)

19 Community Partnership Nonprofit Organization Founded in 2013 Mission: Through education and preventative services, Ready, Set, Smile prepares and empowers all children in our community to care for their oral health

20 Community Partnership Why did we partner with them? Program initiated by a Dental Therapist To promote teamwork between Dental, Dental Therapy, and Dental Hygiene Students RSS s relationship with NE Surveillance System/Forsyth Institute
