1 Welcome to Pa+ent Safety in Epilepsy Monitoring Units Cosponsored by the American Epilepsy Society and the Na7onal Associa7on of Epilepsy Centers
2 Overview of Educa+onal Program Web- based program designed for all health care professionals involved in care of people with epilepsy Targeted to those who will refer pa7ents or care for them before, during or aaer their admission to an epilepsy monitoring unit Made up of several modules that will cover key areas for pa7ent safety in epilepsy monitoring units
3 Goals of Program To understand and implement a culture of safety in caring for persons with epilepsy To enhance the professional s and facility s ability to assess pa7ent safety while caring for persons with epilepsy
4 Goals of Program To provide standardized informa7on To teach appropriate safety skills To share resources on pa7ent safety and preferred prac7ces
5 Content of Program Incorporates recommenda7ons from: Na7onal Associa7on of Epilepsy Centers and its members Surveys of clinical prac7ce in the U.S Project to explore preferred prac7ces in EMU
6 Objec+ve: Consensus Project on Pa+ent Safety in EMUs Compare par7cipants current prac7ce to preferred prac7ces defined by the Delphi assessment
7 Process of Evalua+ng Pa+ent Safety 2006: Survey by Buelow and colleagues found inconsistencies in clinical prac7ce on EMUs that could affect pa7ent safety 2007: Convened a group of individuals with significant experience in the EMU seung Iden7fied areas to be addressed by specific work groups: Seizure Observa7on Seizure Provoca7on Acute Seizures Ac7vity and Environment
8 Review of Literature Literature on preferred prac7ces, evidence- based studies, consensus documents, and gaps reviewed Synthesized findings from different studies Iden7fied expert opinion where published studies were lacking
9 Findings Literature was available on: Acute Seizures Seizure Provoca7on No literature was found on preferred prac7ces or consensus documents specific to pa7ent safety
10 Develop Statements Set of statements that reflected the literature and expert opinion Statements refined by Steering CommiYee and field tested with epilepsy experts and workgroup members
11 Modified Delphi Process for Consensus 36 statements of preferred prac7ce rated using Zoomerang, with likert scale 2 rounds of ra7ng completed Consensus reached if: Items with a mean > 8.0 and without strong biphasic response/ broad spread Ref: Shafer P, et al. 2012
