Developmentally, hearing loss regardless of degree can impair the development of language. 4 StereoZoom StereoZoom helps the wearer focus on the person in front of them. With a binaural fitting, the directional microphones of both hearing aids are wirelessly connected to each other and communicate in real time to provide a very narrow front focus of attention, helping the wearer to concentrate on a conversation in a high-noise environment. StereoZoom has been compared to monaural directional microphones and another system available on the market. This comparison used a defined, diffuse, high-noise environment, in which seven loudspeakers projected cafeteria noise from different directions. Speech reception was measured using the median speech reception threshold SRT. The study showed that StereoZoom performed significantly better than the other two directional microphone systems. 5 Speech in Wind Phonak developed the Speech in Wind algorithm that uses Binaural VoiceStream Technology to improve hearing in asymmetric windy conditions and to increase speech recognition. The increase in speech intelligibility from Speech in Wind has been measured to be as high as 28%. 2 For wearers of binaural devices, wind noise is often only picked up by one or both microphones on the same hearing aid, i.e., asymmetrically. Speech in Wind, set up as an additional hearing instrument program, is immediately activated whenever the system detects an asymmetric wind noise situation so the wearer has no need to recognize the wind noise and take any action. Speech in Wind detects an asymmetric wind noise situation (A). It automatically streams the full audio signal from the hearing aid least affected by wind noise to the other hearing aid (B). The receiving hearing aid filters and mixes the full audio signal, only using the low frequencies it needs from the full audio signal (C). High frequencies are not exchanged so spatial cues needed for localization are preserved. The Speech in Wind system comprises a four-microphone network that allows selected parts of the speech signal to be shared from the least affected hearing aid to the most affected (see illustration). 6 DuoPhone Children with hearing loss often find phone calls difficult to follow. Phonak s DuoPhone helps them overcome this challenge. When a child holds the phone to one ear, DuoPhone automatically streams the caller s voice to the other ear. This binaural approach leads to superior sound quality and improved understanding, with a proven average benefit of 3.1 db SNR compared to a monaural telephone program. 3 Our research has shown that children typically receive a 30% improvement in speech understanding on the telephone with use of the DuoPhone, and as a result, we consider the DuoPhone to be an absolutely essential feature on hearing aids fitted for children. 7 SoundRecover No matter what a child s degree of hearing loss, developing age-appropriate speech and language is highly dependent upon consistent access to all the sounds of speech. While today s hearing solutions address this challenge well, there are still some limitations. When it comes to a child hearing high-pitched sounds such as /s/, /sh/, /t/ and /f/, SoundRecover (nonlinear frequency compression) can help overcome this challenge. SoundRecover gently compresses and shifts these consonants into a range where they become audible, improving a child s access to the full spectrum of sound. 14 Phonak CROS Phonak CROS solutions can provide a benefit for young patients who have a significant hearing loss in one ear and better or normal hearing on the other ear, such as in Single Sided Deafness (SSD). If presented with one of the above-mentioned hearing loss configurations, children will usually show three main symptoms: Inability to determine the direction of sound Inability to separate background noise from target sound Difficulty hearing high-frequency sounds due to head-shadow effect Phonak CROS is a wireless solution specifically designed to meet the unique needs of children with SSD: Sound is picked up by a microphone worn on the side with poorer hearing It is then wirelessly transmitted to a device worn on the better hearing ear Phonak CROS wireless technology offers outstanding sound quality and is the smallest solution on the market.
