Course contents: Definition. Functional organization of the human brain, production of emotions, perceptio, movement, speech, memory, attentio, etc. under normal circumstances. 3 3 knowledge of the principles, theories and practices of community work in the field of mental health have knowledge of the main approaches to understanding and treatment of mental disorders be aware of the role of sociocultural factors in the emergence and course of mental disorders be aware of the principles of organization and functioning of community mental health services be aware of legal issues in the treatment of persons with mental disorders be familiar with the concepts of advocacy, empowerment and self-help, as well as the principle of recovery in mental health Course contents: The course offers an introduction to the principles and practices of community clinical psychology. The students will be introduced to the main models of understanding and treatment of mental health problems, their historical development and the critiques against them, as well as in the existing system of community mental health services. The course will cover the role of sociocultural factors in the emergence and course of mental disorders, as well as issues concerning the implication of the law in the treatment of persons with mental health problems. 4 4 short scientific research proposals and reports Course contents: The course constitutes a review of social psychological theorizing and research on prejudice and racism and aims at the familiarization of students with the social implications of various social psychological approaches to intergroup relations. It includes two-hour theoretical lectures on the following subjects: Introduction of the concept of prejudice in social psychology and attempts to measure it The Social cognition perspective Psychodynamic approaches Approaches based on Social Identity Theory Theories of 'new racism' Discursive Psychology and the analysis of racist discourse ideological dilemmas and Rhetoric In addition, the course includes hourly workshops in which various research methods to the study of racism and intergroup relations (stereotype research, social attitudes scales, study of the "new racism", and analysis of racist discourse) are comparatively examined and their potential contribution is evaluated. Students are invited to make research proposals and to use in practice specific methods of data collection and analysis. 5 5 and competences): Upon successful completion of the course, students will have basic level knowledge of the brain mechanisms involved in neuronal and functional recovery, the theoretical foundation of the cognitive rehabilitation approach and the behavioral methods and applications which are effective in the rehabilitation of higher cognitive functions. Prerequisites: NEUROPSYCHOLOGY I: INTRODUCTION Course contents: Cognitive methods of treatment intervention and mechanisms of recovery of patients with neuropsychological dysfunction (e.g., after traumatic brain injury). Theoretical foundations and rehabilitation techniques for impaired attention, memory, communication, executive functioning and awareness. 6 6 SPRING SEMESTER Course Title: Psychopathology Name of Lecturer: Evrynomi Avdi Course Code: ΨΥ-481 Type of course: Compulsory Level of course: Year of study: 2 Semester/trimester: - Number of credits: 6 and competences): Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to a) understand and recognize the main groups of psychological disorders in contemporary systems of classification b) give a diagnosis to a clinical vignette and explain their rationale c) discuss possible aetiological factors and theories of aetiology for the main diagnostic categories d) think critically about the concept of psychiatric diagnosis, its limitations and usefulness. Course contents: The course provides a critical presentation of the issues that concern the definition, description, conceptualization and treatment of behaviour deemed abnormal. Specifically, we will discuss the diagnostic systems, the main diagnostic categories according to DSM-IV-TR and the main psychological hypotheses (cognitive-behavioural, psychodynamic, humanistic, family/ systems and sociocultural) as well as neurobiological theories regarding the conceptualization of these disorders. In addition, we present briefly the main treatments for these disorders and we discuss the usefulness, the limitations and the consequences of diagnosis as an institutional practice. Moreover, clinical material is presented with a focus on formulation in clinical psychology and the role of diagnostic systems in this process. Assessment methods: Exams

We will present the biopsychosocial model and focus on the interactions between the biological, behavioural, psychological and social factors that affect the development and course of illness. Specifically, we will discuss the relationship between stress and illness, the processes involved in identifying symptoms and illness behaviours, the relationship between personality and health, social inequalities in health, the experience of chronic illness, specific illnesses (heart disease, cancer, AIDS), psychological issues in terminal illness, critical health psychology, doctor-patient communication and relationship, health prevention and professional issues regarding health psychologists. Also, students will have basic knowledge of the neuropsychological deficits often found in various neurological, psychiatric and other disorders. Course contents: Goals and methods of neuropsychological assessment. Basic principles for the development of tests based on theories of brain functioning and selection of test batteries for diagnosis of cerebral damage or dysfunction. Interpretation of neuropsychological assessment results and report writing. Administration of commonly used tests in clinical assessment and research. Neuropsychological deficits in various neurological, psychiatric and other disorders.
