1 MODULE SPECIFICATION POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMMES KEY FACTS Module name Behavioural Medicine Module code HYM003 School School of Health Sciences Department or equivalent Division of Health Services Research and Management UK credits 15 ECTS 7.5 Level 7 MODULE SUMMARY Module outline and aims The rationale of the module is to provide students with the skills to critically evaluate empirical evidence and theoretical models in behavioural medicine. This will include behaviours associated with health outcomes. You will also have exposure to practical administration of some psychometric tests. The module aims: 1. To develop your awareness of assessment strategies in behavioural medicine. 2. To develop your basic knowledge of interventions within the context of behavioural medicine. 3. To enable you to critically appraise the current knowledge, theory and empirical research in behavioural medicine. Content outline The content of the module may include, any or all of the following: Life enhancing and compromising health behaviours, for example screening, adherence, sleep hygiene, physical activity, smoking, alcohol and drug use, and healthy eating. Practical administration of psychometric tests (e.g. neuropsychology). WHAT WILL I BE EXPECTED TO ACHIEVE? On successful completion of this module, you will be expected to be able to: Knowledge and understanding: Exhibit a conceptual understanding of the field of behavioural medicine as a discipline, and the role of the health/clinical psychologist within this. Demonstrate knowledge of aetiological parameters across a variety of health- related behaviours. Critically understand the rationales for the use of specific evaluation tools in behavioural medicine. Demonstrate a substantive understanding of behavioural interventions in the prevention and treatment of health-related disorders within behavioural medicine.
2 Display critical insight into empirical research within behavioural medicine, and identify the implications of specific research findings for future research and clinical practice. Skills: Critically evaluate the merits and limitations of research methodology and methodological approaches within behavioural medicine. Exhibit basic assessment skills (including neuropsychology measures, use of self-report measures, physical activity, weight management, etc.) relevant to behavioural medicine. Assemble, integrate and critically appraise information obtained from diverse sources, (e.g. academic journals, specialist books, websites, and organisations). Values and attitudes: Appreciate and respect individuals health values, motivation and barriers to health behaviour change as well as learning the value of interdisciplinary working. HOW WILL I LEARN? Lectures will provide an opportunity to explain and discuss the body of knowledge in behavioural medicine. The lectures will include different teaching modalities; formal presentation; group discussions, workshop-style exercises and preparatory reading between lectures. The lectures will give you the opportunity to develop skills in working with others and in working independently. Formative feedback is provided in order to help you develop your critical thinking and academic writing skills. Teaching pattern: Teaching component Interactive lectures and group discussion Teaching type Contact hours (scheduled) Self-directed study hours (independent) Placement hours Seminar Total student learning hours TOTALS WHAT TYPES OF ASSESSMENT AND FEEDBACK CAN I EXPECT? Assessments You will be asked to submit a short critical appraisal review of a paper (1,000 words) on a chosen health-related behaviour, which will contribute 20% to your overall mark for the module. You will receive feedback on the critical appraisal review that you can later incorporate to the next assessment of the module.
3 The next assessment of the module will be a 2,000 word essay in the form of a critical literature review related to a specific health-related behaviour and will count 80% towards the overall mark for the module. Typically this would include a review of aetiology, evaluation, and treatment outcome studies. Your account is expected to be informed by relevant literature as well as by independent literature searches through e.g. PsycInfo, Medline etc. The essay will give you the opportunity to demonstrate your ability to consider and formulate problems/ issues and how they might be addressed based on empirical and theoretical evidence. More information will be available from the module leader. Feedback on assessment Following an assessment, marks and feedback will be provided in line with the Assessment Regulations and Policy. You will receive your mark via Moodle, followed by your coursework with feedback sheet. A selection of all assessments will be internally moderated and sent to the external examiner. All initial marks will be therefore provisional pending external examiner approval and assessment board. More information on the timing and type of feedback that will be provided by the module leader for each assessment. Marks will be available within 3 weeks of hand in. You can arrange to see the module leader or your personal tutor about any feedback you have been given and are advised to use this in future modules when the criteria relate to transferable areas such as presentation, use of literature and theory and ability to analyse, evaluate or synthesise. Assessment Regulations The Pass mark for the module is 50%. Any minimum qualifying marks for specific assessments are listed in the table above.
