1 What happens during your hospital stay Revised May 23, 2012

2 Day of Surgery Have the Valet service park your vehicle and come into the main entrance Go to Patient Registration in the main lobby of the hospital

3 You will be admitted to the pre-op unit A nurse will: Start an IV Check your vital signs Review your medical information Apply white elastic stockings Before Surgery

4 During your surgery Your visitors should wait in the Surgical Waiting Room, located on the first floor of the hospital There will be a volunteer there that can answer questions that your family may have

5 After your surgery You will be in the recovery room (PACU) for 30 min-2hr You will then go to the orthopedic unit (4-1)

6 After your surgery Your surgeon or covering doctor will see you each day in the hospital You will also be seen by: Orthopedic resident Physician Assistant (PA) The Resident(s) and PAs are an extension of your surgeon They are available throughout the day to assist you when your surgeon is in the office or operating room

7 After your surgery The Resident(s) and PAs are able to write orders as needed They will monitor things such as: Blood pressure Glucose level Your surgical incision Pain Management

8 Pain Control We will ask you to rate your pain using a pain scale of 0-10: No pain Terrible pain

9 Pain Control We will use a variety of ways to manage your pain, this may include: Pills Ice Packs/Gel Bags Nerve block (given in the OR) *Discuss any concerns about pain control with your surgeon, PA, or nurse!

10 Preventing Blood Clots Several measures will be used to prevent blood clots including: White elastic stockings Medications Foot Pumps Walking Foot Pumps: *Talk with your surgeon if you have concerns

11 To help lung inflation after your operation you should: Cough Take deep Breaths Use your Incentive Spirometer 10 times every hour while you are awake Deep Breathing

12 Tubes, Drains, Catheters You will have oxygen, IV fluids, & a catheter in your bladder when you wake up from your surgery While unlikely, your surgeon could place a Hemovac or OrthoPat in the OR

13 Positioning after surgery For Hip replacement: Pillow between legs Roll side to side with help A Knee Immobilizer may be used You will have an ice pack on the operative hip

14 Positioning after surgery For Knee replacement: Continuous Passive Motion (CPM) is used You will have an ice pack on the operative knee

15 Weight Bearing Weight bearing as tolerated Weight bearing as ordered by your MD *Physical therapy will work with you and explain what you can and cannot do

16 Questions? For additional information about your hospital stay please contact the Orthopedic Nursing Unit (4-1)

17 Physical Therapy You are having a joint replacement to regain the mobility that you have lost Your surgeon can put in a new joint, but only you can move it!

18 Physical Therapy You will have to work hard but the effort will be worth it! When it is time for PT it is important that you participate Group therapy will be 2x a day after your surgery

19 Physical Therapy Bring loose fitting shorts or pants and sneakers (if you have them) to wear to group therapy We will provide you with a gown and shorts if you prefer to wear ours

20 Physical Therapy Goals for discharge include: Walk feet Walk up and down stairs, if needed Exercise independently Additional Goals: Knee: steady progression of knee bending Hip: follow up hip dislocation precautions

21 Hip Dislocation Precautions After surgery your physical therapist will teach you your hip dislocation precautions They may include: Do not bend more than a 90 degree angle Do not turn the operated leg inward Do not cross legs or ankles
