2 Wire Stripping Use neutral wrist posture while stripping wire Use minimal force on your hands while wire stripping Keep right hand neutral while using tool across body

3 Working on the Ladder While on ladder, keep your body centered on the ladder and position yourself at the proper height. If the body isn t centered on the ladder, the likelihood of loosing your balance increases. Also, if you work at a height that isn t appropriate for you, the reach distance will increase and awkward posture is likely. Neutral Solutions: Position yourself so that your arms are neutral and the work is directly in front of you. Wrong

4 Wire Wrapping While wire wrapping, keep the wrist neutral and elbow close to your side. Make sure the tool fits your hand size. Make sure the tool is working well & is maintained.

5 Wire Unwrapping Problem: revolutions of the wrist while unwrapping. Essential to have the wrist neutral. What are you doing with your other hand?

6 Minimize reach distances while working on the frame. Problem: The further you reach away from your body, the harder your body works day after day. Awkward wrist and shoulder Solutions; The closer you position yourself to your work, the more neutral your posture will be. Neutral Shoulder posture

7 Avoid Overextending when lifting or working

8 Position yourself close to your work. Wrong Neutral As your arms move away from your body, the back & arm muscles work harder.

9 Remember: Vision can drive posture When your work involves visually intensive tasks, your posture may be affected by your visual needs. TIP: Keep your vision correction current.

10 Use proper lifting posture Problem: Improperly lifting a wire bag, wire reel, boxes, or other items can lead to increased spinal disc pressure which lead to back discomfort or pain. Solution: Always use proper posture while lifting objects. When lifting an object: Avoid Twisting - Change direction by moving your feet, not your torso. Avoid Jerking - Lift smoothly. Avoid Side lifting - Keep the object in front of you. Avoid Overextending when lifting or working - Keep the object close in to your body. Avoid Bending at the waist - Keep the torso upright, especially when standing up. If the weight of the object exceeds your capability to lift it: Divide the load into smaller portions. Get help or use a mechanical device.

17 Handling Wire Reels When handling wire reels, make sure you lift using proper lifting techniques.

18 Pushing and Dragging Material Pull awkward items such as burn bags. Use your legs!! TIP: Create a wire handle for the wire bag to assist in pulling the wire bag

19 Pushing and Dragging Material Always push a ladder

20 Pushing and Dragging Material The scrap wire bag needs to be gently pulled out of the metal bin. Don t allow the bag to fill up too full. It s harder to pull out of the bin and harder to drag across the work area.

21 Running Jumpers Keep wrists & Shoulders neutral Position yourself so that you minimize your reach When shelving jumpers, use an assistive device or lay up stick.

22 Cosmic Frame Minimize force by not pounding the punch down tool Remember to keep wrist neutral when using punch down tool.

23 Kneeling while working Problem: Kneeling on the hard surface of the Central Office can add to the long term wear and tear of the knee joint. Solution: Use knee pads or a foam pad to kneel on especially if the work will be over a few minutes.. Or sit down.

24 Ergonomics while working on the computer Feet flat on the floor or footrest. Support the back while sitting. Keep everything within an easy reach. Neutral wrist position while typing or mousing. Top of the VDT screen at eye height or slightly below.
