2 Summary of 2008 Global Report Substantial increases in HIV prevention and treatment efforts- they are producing results in a number of heavily affected countries The number of new HIV infections has fallen in several countries. However the AIDS epidemic is not over in any part of the world HIV requires a long term response that is grounded in evidence and human rights. The AIDS response needs strong leadership at all levels of society as well as sustainable financing. UNAIDS
