Distracted Driving Patrick Garey We sow a thought and reap an act; We sow an act and reap a habit; We sow a habit and reap a character; We sow a character and reap a destiny Distracted Driving Words Statistics Use them for illumination rather than support Reflection Evaluate your own habits An Assignment Statistically 95% of all injuries are behavioral 05% of all injuries are mechanical Driving is the number one cause of workplace stress for people who drive for a living Driving is the riskiest and most hazardous activity we do all day. I acknowledge that participating in driving involves known and unanticipated risks, which could result in physical or emotional injury, paralysis or permanent disability, death and property damage. Kinds of Distractions Visual Distractions Anything that will take your eyes off the road. Manual Distractions Anything that will take your hands off the wheel. Cognitive Distractions Anything that will take your mind off the road. 1
Visual Distractions Anything that will take your eyes off the road. Visual Distractions* 90% of your decisions are based on information you gather with your eyes. Vision We have three basic types of vision. 1. Peripheral Vision 2. Central Vision 3. Focus Vision Inattentional Blindness When an individual fails to recognize an unexpected stimulus that is in plain sight. Change Blindness Occurs when a change in a visual stimulus is introduced and the observer does not notice it. Default Mode Network commonly shown to be active when a person is not focused on the outside world and the brain is at wakeful rest, such as during daydreaming and mind-wandering Manual Distractions Anything that will take your hands of the wheel. Cognitive Distractions Anything that will take your mind off the primary task of driving. The History of Distractions 2

Acetylene Carbide Lamps 1880 s to about In England in 1901 Guglielmo Marconi fitted a radio to a Thornycroft steam powered vehicle. The radio only received data, not sound. By 1913 Windshield Wipers were routinely installed on automobiles 1903 Mobile radio-based phone systems started in the early 1900 s in the form of ship to shore radio, and some police cars had them by The Chicago Police Department 4
Transitone Crosley Roamio Car Radio Radio Manufacturers Association v State Legislators Radio is not distracting because it demands no attention from the driver and requires no answer, as does conversation between the driver and passengers. Motor car radio is tuned by ear without the driver taking his eyes off the road. It is less disconcerting than the rear view mirror."... C.C. 9 Cognitive Distractions Anything that will take your mind off the primary task of driving. Cognitive Distractions Carnegie-Mellon Carnegie-Mellon Activity in the parietal lobe, which is associated with spatial sense and navigation was reduced 37% Trying to Multi-task can reduce productivity 40% Multitasking Performing two tasks simultaneously. Switching from one task to another without completing the first task. Performing two or more tasks in rapid succession. The very act of driving, when done correctly, is multitasking Can we achieve 100% focus on driving? 9
Dr. David Strayer University of Utah What we have learned is that some of these voice based technologies are putting demands on the brain to try and multitask in ways that exceed the ability to be able to that activity and drive safely. - Dr. David Strayer Have we hit critical mass when it comes to cellphones? We have seen from a historical perspective how we got to where we are with the increasing risks of distracted driving No matter what the distraction, it's how we choose to react/interact with those distractions that make the difference We sow a thought and reap an act; We sow an act and reap a habit; We sow a habit and reap a character; We sow a character and reap a destiny 10
