Most people aren't aware that about 18 people die each day waiting for transplants that can t take place because of the shortage of donated organs (women's health)? Many people are against using artificial organs because they believe that they aren t going to work and that they aren t right. People believe that Regenerated organs/ artificial organs aren t right because a printer creates the organs and biomaterials are used to create the structure. People don t think they will work because they may not be able to function the way the real organ was intended to function to help maintain the body. However many people do support this new and foreign idea. Some reasons these people support this idea is because it reduces people waiting on donor lists as well as these new artificial organs are created specifically for you by using your stem cells. Since every living organism requires organs to live artificial organs should be used because doctors have performed a successful transplant using a regenerated organ, Many people end up dieing waiting on donor lists, and the way these organs are made. First off there was successful transplant that scientists and doctors teamed up to do by using a regenerated windpipe. This is the first ever transplant involving a regenerated organ. The scientists used the patient's own tissue combined with stem cells to create a genetically unique organ specifically for him. The scientists also created the new trachea in the same specific shape

Dr. Paolo Macchiarini is quoted in the article Lab-made Organ Implanted for First Time saying, His body accepted the new trachea, and he even had a cough reflex two days after the surgery (Park). This shows a major breakthrough for scientists as well as doctors around the world. This is important because after all of the years scientists have been trying to perfect this method all their research finally paid off in a successful transplant. This quote is also important because this proves the people that believe this practice would not work properly wrong. Not only did the surgery go well and be successful, but the patient also experienced a cough reflex which plays a huge role in proving people wrong about how the regenerated organs would not function like the real ones once had. This was a huge breakthrough for science as we know it and hopefully it will save more lives in the near future. In light of this extraordinary transplant, how many people end up dieing waiting on donor lists. About 4,100 transplant candidates are added to the national waiting list each month (Womenshealth). Not everyone is able to donate their organs as well. If someone has HIV, an actively spreading brain cancer, or current infections before they die they will not be able to donated. Over 1.2 million people in the USA suffer from HIV in our day in age. Womenshealth states that 18 people die each day waiting for transplants that can t take place because the shortage of donated organs (Womenshealth). These 18 people s death could have been prevented had they received regenerated organs. The artificial organs can be made instead of having to wait on a donor list, so why not make them and save more lives? Why not prevent as many preventable deaths that we can so the people that wait on these donor lists don t have to worry about not getting a organ in time. Dr. Harald Ott presents that Those who are fortunate to get an organ must remain on powerful immunosuppression medicines for life to stop their bodies

The donated organ that the person has waited so long for may not even end up working for their body because they face the chance of their body rejecting it and all that time waiting was for nothing. If they get an artificial organ their body faces a less likely chance of rejecting it because they make them using their own cells, also they won't have to be on medicine for all their life just so their body will accept the donor s organ. So why not make new organs instead of watching people die? Why not save lives that can be saved and allow that person to live longer instead of dieing from not getting a donor s organ? Next up is regenerated organs are made. Artificial organs can be created as of two ways, cleaning the organs as well as printing an organ. They can be cleaned by removing all of its cells and then use what's left as a building block for the new functioning tissue that can be replaced by the patient's stem cells. Printed organs can be made by using a 3D printer to project the image/shape the patient needs. Anthony Atala goes on to explain how artificial organs are made. This printer is unique in that it can use biomaterial gels as well as rigid polymers so that any three-dimensional shape can be created (Regenerative medicine s). This is a key point because not only are they able to make organs but they can create any shape/ organ that they may need. They are not only limited to making one type of organ but the possibilities are endless and they can create the exact same size and shape of the patient s original organ so it will be a perfect fit every time. Another key point Dr. Atala brings up is that the new bladder is nurtured in an incubator that mimics body conditions, allowing the cells to grow and knit together (Organs made to order). This is important because putting their organ through a real life simulator shows if it will be capable to survive in the body. It will also show if the scientists work was worth it or not. Scientists are using natural materials to create these organs so that they will work as

4 Example B 4 intended. Also so that the body won't reject these artificial organs because the scientists use the patient's own stem cells. Furthermore regenerated organs are the future for science. Two things that will be brought up is, first how this procedure can help fight and cancer and secondly how much money it could potentially save us. Cancer in general kills about 7.6 million people die each year worldwide. Dr. Ott claims that if a patient has a cancerous portion of his lung removed, his lung cells can be grown in the lab and used to test treatment responses (Mass general). This is important to the future because if they could use the same process that they do to make artificial organs to possibly treat cancer, cancer could potentially stop being one of the leading reasons people die worldwide. If they could do this we can jump right to a treatment that his cancer does respond to Dr.Ott Says (Mass general). Scientists and doctors could stop wasting time trying to guess what will be able to fight the cancer and try killing the cancer cells right away so that the patient's chance of surviving increases. If they could do this the words you have cancer wouldn t be as scary because the person whose hearing this would know they have a greater chance of living due to being able to test a piece of the cancerous organ to see what will kill it right away. People at this point are now wondering how much money could this save everyone? It will be explained that in the next paragraph. Lastly how much money could be saved by using regenerated organs. The average american spends about $1,081 per year and about $4,823 per family (Here s what). This amount only goes up more and more in the future years to come. Atala continues by stating Early estimates project that regenerative medicine therapies will result in direct healthcare cost savings in the United States of $250 billion per year (Regenerative medicine s). If Americans

5 Example B 5 resort to using regenerated organs instead of relying on donor lists people could end up saving a lot of money plus our country benefits as well. With this money people could save the could spend it on other things they need and could do more things as a family. Everyone would benefit from this change because our healthcare companies wouldn't have to worry about donor lists which can be costly of time as well as money. I believe Americans would enjoy this change not only for the sake of money but also so they know their loved ones can be treated in a unique way that is specifically for them and that the artificial organ will work for them. People cannot deny that fact that humans all need organs to live. Regenerated organs should be used in modern day medicine as well as everyday transplants. A successful transplant has already been performed using a regenerated organ displaying that regenerated organs do in fact work and save lives. Many people end up dieing for an organ they need that they will never get so why not make them one? The way these organs are made is safe because they use your stem cells and are put to the test by being placed in an incubator to see if it can withstand the environment of the body. If people use this gift of science less people would die from organ failure and the possibility that the donated organ could be defective. Why does it matter if an organ is artificial and one is not? They both function the same way and get the job done properly. With all the limitless possibilities there are with regenerated organs whether its shape or size anything can be made. Instead of ignoring this beautiful gift why not use it and save lives. Let s support the scientists research as well as this idea and inform others of what can be done to save lives.
