1 Brilliant Student s Last Name 1 Brilliant Student Ms. LaDuca ENG February 26, 2014 Half Off, Human Organs for Sale Human organ selling creates a sense of discomfort in society because it questions the morals and ethics of people s beliefs. The sole purpose in selling one s organs is just to simply save more lives. The idea that human organ selling is a tragic thing needs to be recanted from the minds of society today. The outcome of human organ selling will always outweigh the bad that could potentially come of it. In today s society the rate of deaths on the organ transplant list is now five to seven lives a day ( Body Organ Sales Discussed as Way to Increase Supply ). A vast majority of people are dying due to a lack of human organs available as they wait on the United Network for Organ Sharing list. Through the legalization of human organ selling, society can ultimately obviate further deaths. The Organ Transplant list goes through a vigorous process as to whether someone deserves an organ. This list does save lives, but more die than are actually saved, which shows society isn t moving forward, it s regressing. The hope that people get when they are finally on the waiting list becomes diminished as they find out the actual time it would take to receive the organ they need. Kidneys take over 1,000 days and all other organs over 100 days (Organ Transplantation: The Process). In the past without the organ transplant list, no lives were being
2 Brilliant Student s Last Name 2 saved. Medicine has come a long way but still needs to go further by accepting the selling of human organs. The society of today needs to make better use of the scarce supply of organs (Eidelson). Through past mistakes the future of many lives is in the hand of this crucial idea. The controversy of this problem is only wasting time because too many kids, teens, and adults, die waiting for organs and that is one thing that society should agree on. A key factor in this is that United Network for Organ Sharing donor list has too many requirements to get on the list. They need a certain age, if they think the patient will live, if the patient is elderly, and more. Instead of giving the organs to the person next in line the transplant list is now giving to the person who is youngest and could live longer (Eidelson). These harsh requirements close the road off to saving lives and the reasonable solution is human organ selling. Another factor is the cost of getting an organ. The price is an impediment blocking the way to a life being saved. For a heart and lung transplant the total comes out to $1,148,400 ( Financing a Transplant ). The depth of this problem extends and worsens day by day as more people die from a cause that could be resolved. If society doesn t change, the human race does not stand a chance. It is difficult to get admitted onto the United Network for Organ Sharing list, and once on the list, it will take months before the actual transplant takes place. With that said, there will be an increase in money for hospital stay and people will ultimately go into debt. Now it s not too late to prevent further saturnine turmoil. The very idea of legalization might sound gruesome to most people, but it shouldn t, especially since research shows it would save lives (Gregory). This pejorative snowball effect will impinge disasters onto the hoi polloi of today s society.
3 Brilliant Student s Last Name 3 Society needs an instant solution to temporarily palliate the situation until something more can be done. A Band-Aid fix to situation is to have being declared brain dead as an immutable death to where now if that person was an organ donor there are more organs. There aren t enough organs to go around and that is the problem, with only 20,000 kidneys for 80,000 patients that s a 60,000 person death rate (Gregory). This may sound immoral but the need for these organs is great. People say that once the patient is brain dead there is a still a chance for them to come to life but, brain death is not coma. Brain death is death (Organ Transplantation: The Process. So instead of spending thousands maintaining a life no longer here, donations of organs should be given. In a way the kismet of one s life is in the hands of another. This Band-Aid solution could cause concern again when it comes to morality but, it is not as a drastic measure as human organ selling but, it is still imperative for a quick fix. The way to get rid of the disastrous problem of losing lives, society needs to create a human organ selling program. Throughout the world there are black markets for this type of industry including the United States and in the U.S., a black market for human tissue exists (Scheve). This sapient idea of selling human organs will not only help those who need their life saved but, it will also provide money to the poor. This program, if created, could be a paradigm to the rest of the world and future society. If this were to become a legal law the amount of lives saved will be a patent change from how things are now. Currently it is illegal in the United States and most other countries to receive pay from a person for their organs, but that needs to soon change in order to create a more sanguine society (Scheve). It has been in discussion for years now, and sooner or later the government needs to take action and make this an onus, before too many lives are lost. Most researches and doctors say, let s have a five-year trial in a
4 Brilliant Student s Last Name 4 few states and see what happens ( Body Organ Sales Discussed as Way to Increase Supply ). Although it is a recondite situation, through just a five year trial the world will see the potential and growth that they can achieve through selling human organs. Societies throughout the world truly have nothing to think about, the idea of organ selling may sound like a machination, but in the end it s for the best. With every law there is going to be obloquy but in time they will see the lives that are now being saved due to the overflow of organs. To decrease the amount of money spent in which, costs start to add up, even before your transplant human organ selling will reduce that cost as well ( Financing a Transplant ). At the end of the day it s about what society feels is necessary to maintain and save lives. In the eyes of most rakish people, if someone is given a life, that person should be able to live it as long as possible. With a human organ selling program, it will make all of that possible.
