3 Introduction This is a small book on some techniques I have found highly useful. Eastern Medicine has been used for thousands of years for all types of ailments. Mudra and Reflexology are very powerful and very easy to use on your self. Although there is not much detail in this free ebook, used in conjunction with the main X-Pain text, you can add these techniques into your daily routine. They will benefit your spinal and general/emotional health. Use them, explore them and enjoy the miracle of Mudra and Reflexology. All the best Dr Graeme Teague
4 Mudra These work very well and can be easily added into your daily routine of doing the Acupressure. Use the ones you feel will benefit, don t feel you need to use all of them. Hold them as suggested and they will help speed up the removal of aches and pains, but they will definitely also help to prevent them. Mudra are easy to in public as for most you only need one hand. Hence are ideal for meetings, social events or when you just don t want anyone seeing what you are doing. Mudra The following Mudra cover the entire body and mind, each finger relates to different areas, systems, emotions and functions of both the mind and body. Holding each position helps to return to balance the functions relating to the particular finger. The five fingers for five elements : Thumb Index Middle Ring Little Fire Air Ether Earth Water Touching together each finger with the thumb stimulates the elements associated with that particular finger. The five elements encompass the entire body, all its organs, muscle and joints, stresses and strains, emotions and energies. To give you entire body a good check-up, simply hold each of these for approximately 15 minutes. This can be done while watching a TV program, sitting down and relaxing or while walking.
5 Gyan Mudra Also known as Jnana. This is the mudra that covers all the functions of the brain and brain related problems. From headaches to sleep patterns, from memory to emotional upsets. This mudra is useful for enhancing mental capabilities. Using this regularly helps to sharpen the memory, mental concentration and thinking processes and in increasing the grasping/learning capacities. It is beneficial for those suffering from insomnia. Practice of this mudra smoothly increases the flow of bloodsupply and circulation in the brain to help energize the neurons for instant action. Only two fingers are used in this mudra; the tip of the index finger and the top of the thumb are mutually touched. The other three fingers are kept apart in a straight position. Akash Mudra This is the mudra for the physical body, muscles and joints, aches and pains. It also relates to the heart and is beneficial for all heart related illnesses form blood pressure to heart disease. Join the tip of your middle finger with the thumb in both hands, press a little and keep rest of the fingers straight. Prithvi Mudra Deficiency of minerals and vitamins causes weakness in the body. Although from the outside you may look healthy and strong, your body becomes weak and hollow from inside. If small amounts of exercise or exertion can make you feel tired, then the
6 prithvi mudra is especially recommended. Prithvi Mudra is essential for a life of fulfillment to ward off energy deficits. The practice of this mudra removes the fatigue and strengthens the weak or tired organs of the body. The body begins to feel energized from inside. The energy of the body naturally strengthens and enthuses the mind, which was earlier dull and irritated because of the constant weakness of the body. A happy mood helps in cheering up and broadening the attitude and focusing the mind. Narrow-mindedness and prejudices are significantly reduced by the practice of this mudra. The tip of the thumb should be placed on top of the ring finger with a little pressure. The other three fingers should be relaxed and extended. It can be done with one hand or both. If your energy is low then use three times a day for fifteen minutes for a good boost. Bhudi Mudra Also known as Varun Mudra. This mudra is quite useful as a remedy for several disorders of the liver. It is also found effective in removing blood related problems. All the health problems caused by the deficiency of water are controlled and removed by regular practice of this mudra. Water constitutes about eighty-five percent of our body. Reduction in this level disturbs the body functions. Stiffness in the body or disorder in blood properties often occur when there is a deficiency of water. It also decreases dryness in the skin and body. To hold this mudra, simply place the tip of the thumb on the little finger while the other fingers remain relaxed and extended. Holding this helps to maintain the fluid balance in the body.
7 The Mudras for Aches & Pains: Akash Mudra Position: Join the tip of your middle finger with the thumb in both hands, press a little and keep rest of the fingers straight. Benefits: This is the mudra for the physical body, muscles and joints, aches and pains. It also relates to the heart and is beneficial for all heart related illnesses form blood pressure to heart disease. Back Mudra Position: The thumb, middle finger and little finger of the right hand touch, the index finger and ring finger are relaxed and extended. On the left hand, place the thumb joint on the nail of the index finger while the other fingers remain relaxed and extended. Benefits: all backaches whether from stress, strain or falls. Try this first if you have more than one part of your spine in discomfort. Mukula Mudra Position: cup the hand and place the four fingertips on the tip of the thumb. Place it on the part of the body that needs more energy. Placed on an organ or body part that is tense or hurt. Benefits: instantly rejuvenates the area it is placed on. Focuses healing on the area like a shaft of light. A very effective healing too, especially for local areas of pain.
8 Joint Mudra Position: place the right thumb and ring finger together, while placing the left thumb and middle fingers together. The other fingers are relaxed and extended. Benefits: very good for any joint problem. It balances the energy in the joints. Suited for joint pain and spinal pain. Vayu Position: bend the index finger of each hand till its tip touches the ball of the thumb. Then press the thumb lightly onto the index finger. The other fingers remain extended and relaxed. Benefits: It cures arthritis, paralysis, gas disease, restlessness & increase blood circulation. Helps in all nervous ailments and improves balance of air element in body, helpful in pains and aches. Hakini Position: fingertips of both hands are placed together. Direct the eyes upward and place the tip of the tongue on the inside gums when inhaling, allow the tongue to fall when exhaling. Benefits: improver memory and stimulates the brain, also helps headaches. Mahasirs Position: the tips of the thumb, index and middle fingers touch each other. Extend the little finger and place the ring finger at the base of the thumb.
9 Benefits: removes headaches and migraines (hold for at least six minutes even if headache disappears sooner). It relieves tension and eliminates mucous congestion in the sinuses. This is the main headache mudra.
10 Reflexology This next section is on Reflexology. Although you can see a practitioner (and it is a good technique to have done), you can still use these techniques. Reflexology as a profession, utilizes the reflexes on the feet. For self techniques the reflexes on the hands are far easier to reach and stimulate. By stimulating these reflexes you are releasing tension in the body and reducing stress levels at the same time. Like all techniques these can not be over used. Reflexology is very simple and can be literally used anywhere and at anytime. Simply by wringing the hands you are stimulating many different reflexes. However the points below can be rubbed and pressed to help relieve your aches and pains. What is Reflexology? Reflexology is the application of pressure, stretch and movement to the feet and hands to effect corresponding parts of the body. Reflexologists view the feet and hands as a mirror image of the body. By applying technique a Reflexologist can break up patterns of stress in other parts of the body. How does reflexology work? Pressure applied to the feet generates a signal through the peripheral nervous system. From there it enters the central nervous system where it is processed in various parts of the brain. It is then relayed to the internal organs to allocate the necessary adjustments in fuel and oxygen. Finally a response is fashioned that is sent onto the motor system. This message is fed forward to adjust the body's tone or overall tension level. If applied properly the tone will reset itself to a lower operating tempo. A lower
11 operating tempo means a lessening of stress and less wear and tear on the body's systems. What are the benefits of Reflexology? In general terms the benefits of reflexology have to do with the reduction of stress. Because the feet and hands help set the tension level for the rest of the body they are an easy way to interrupt the stress signal and reset homeostasis, the body's equilibrium. Reflexology can benefit certain conditions and diseases. This is achieved by stimulation to the organ systems to help them detoxify, repair and recover. Removing stress from the body and mind coincide to help your overall health and well-being. Reflexology is a complement to orthodox and natural health care. It is still best used in conjunction with other modalities, but like all health problems, if severe see someone. When & How should I do Reflexology? Reflexology can be done practically anytime and any where. The trick is consistency. In the East their secret seems to be that they do reflexology once a day for six days in two week segments. Then they review the results and do more segments as necessary. With the hands and ears, simply rub the areas and notice any changes. Is there discomfort, pain, a nodule feeling (it may feel crunchy) or any difference from one area to another. Rubbing this spots for a few seconds or up to a minute or so, eases the tension and helps the body to restore balance to the area it relates to. You can do these techniques each and every day as part of your regime to build your health. Or use it when you are rundown to help recover the health you desire Be creative but be consistent. Five minutes a day is worth more than an hour once in awhile.
