1 Why does your back hurt? Low back pain is one of the most common patient complaints affecting 80% of adults at some point in their lives. Generally the source of pain is in the spine and/or its supporting structure which can include the spinal joints, discs, vertebrae or soft tissues. The surrounding muscles and ligaments may become inflamed and irritated causing most people to experience pain primarily in the lower back. However, the pain may spread to the buttocks, thighs or knees. Many people may also experience spasms with back pain. The symptoms are generally more noticeable with bending of the back and when lifting heavy objects. The spine requires support and flexibility which is provided by the core group of muscles around the spine and the torso. Without flexibility, stability, and strength, the joints, discs, and tissues are abnormally stressed, which eventually leads to pain. Knowing the right course of treatment reduces your back pain. That is why at Ottauquechee Physical Therapy we help you on the road towards a new future without back pain. 3 Why does your knee hurt? Knee pain can dramatically affect your life. It can stop you from walking and getting around like you normally do. This can impact your social, mental, and physical well being. Generally the source of pain is from joint, cartilage, from an old injury, or by the way your walking may have changed slightly. The surrounding muscles and ligaments may have become weak or tight causing increased pressure to your knee with resulting increase in pain and inflammation. In addition, the pain may also spread to the thigh or lower down. It may even affect your back due to limping. Many people experience arthritis in the knee which is commonly a wearing down of the cartilage. This causes a stiffening of the knee and weakening of the surrounding muscles. The knee requires support and flexibility which is provided by the muscles around the joint and the rest of the leg. By increasing flexibility of the knee, hip, and ankle joints along with strengthening, knee pain can be reduced. Knowing the right course of treatment will reduce your knee pain. That is why at Ottauquechee Physical Therapy we can help you on the road towards a new future without knee pain. 4 Help to relieve your knee pain Physical therapy is the natural way of helping your body relieve knee pain and improving your walking. At Ottauquechee Physical Therapy, your knees, hips, and ankles are extensively evaluated by an expert physical therapist who has years of training in medical evaluation of musculoskeletal conditions and analyzing walking. Your physical therapist then addresses the root cause of your pain. The treatment plan will include addressing all lower extremity dysfunctions contributing to you knee pain. Included in the plan will be modalities to reduce inflammation and pain, specialized manual techniques to increase soft tissue and joint mobility, and a home exercise program to stabilize the knee. Patient success Enjoying life again! Success story by: R.M. My knee had been replaced five years earlier and over time had become extremely painful with increasingly limited flexibility. After two visits for x-ray, cat scan, and other tests with the orthopedic department that had performed my surgery, I was informed that my knee was perfect, there were no medical issues with the replacement, and I was informed I would simply have to learn to live with the discomfort. Fortunately my primary care physician referred me to Peter Mayock at Ottauquechee Physical Therapy. From the onset Peter and his colleagues were patient, considerate, and encouraging. They released the restrictions in the hip above my replaced knee and placed me on an exercise program to strengthen my entire leg. The treatment returned the flexibility I had lost and eventually made me pain free for the first time since my operation. By continuing to use the program they set up for me, I have maintained the dramatic progress. For the first time since my surgery I m enjoying the activities that I thought would never again be possible. Peter P. 5 Why does your neck hurt? Neck pain is a very common complaint that affects many people. Stress, poor posture, sitting at a computer for long periods, weakness in the shoulders, and a host of other factors can cause you to feel pain in the neck. Generally the source of pain is in the spinal joints, discs, vertebrae, or soft tissues. The surrounding muscles and ligaments may become inflamed and irritated causing most people to experience pain primarily in the mid and lower neck. However, the pain may spread to the shoulders and up into the head. Headaches and even migraines are a common problem from tightness in the neck. 6 Help to relieve your neck pain Physical therapy is the natural way of helping your body recover from neck pain. At Ottauquechee Physical Therapy, your cervical spine (neck) is extensively evaluated by an expert physical therapist who has years of training in medical evaluation of musculoskeletal and nerve conditions. Your physical therapist then addresses the root cause of your pain. The treatment plan may include modalities to relieve pain, specialized gentle manual therapy to increase soft tissue and joint mobility, and specific spinal exercises to rebuild your shoulder and spinal strength. Patient success No more neck pain! Success story by: R.R. I am a 78 year old women who has suffered from headaches since the age of 12. These headaches occurred daily with monthly debilitating migraines. At the age of 62 I was forced to quit a stimulating and profitable career which involved weekly trips to Europe because I was in so much pain. Over the years I sought consultations and help from neurologists, chiropractors, acupuncturists, and massage therapist with only minimal relief. I was continuing to struggle with daily activities, in short there was little joy in my life. As a last ditch attempt to obtain enjoyable living, I asked my primary care physician to issue a referral to Peter Mayock at OPTS about whom I had received excellent recommendations. After a couple of weeks of treatment by Peter and his colleagues my headaches have disappeared and most of the chronic neck pain has been relieved. I have returned to enjoyable activities and resumed an optimistic attitude toward daily living. I only wish I could have been seen by Mr. Mayock 25 years ago so I could have pursued an active and enjoyable life sooner. Peter P. Mayock Owner Physical Therapist - Clinical Director When you are experiencing pain, you need to turn to a physical therapist who listens and responds...an experienced physical therapist who knows the field and can effectively diagnose and treat your needs...a physical therapist who will deliver immediate relief and has the knowledge and tools to prevent recurrences. We look forward to making the difference in your recovery and getting you back to the activities you love. Patient success Immediate relief from pain! Success story by: R.M. I underwent a Total Knee replacement in 2006 which never gave me total relief from my knee pain or eliminated my limp. I went for rehab at the hospital where the surgery was done, as well as several private physical therapy clinics for 18 months after the surgery without relief from the ache in my knee. At my last post-op visit with my orthopedist I was told this is as good as I would get. By 2013 I found my knee buckling when I was going down stairs and my ability to get up after sitting was very painful and stiff. My sleeping was interrupted by sharp pain in my knee. In June of 2013 my primary care physician suggested I see Peter Mayock, PT at his Ottauquechee Physical Therapy clinic to attempt one more round of rehabilitation. Following Peter s evaluation he pointed out to me that I never obtained full ROM or strength and I was walking around on a bent knee. It was also clear that my entire right leg was involved with weakness and a loss of mobility. Treatment was initiated during that first apointment. Mr. Mayock s approach and techniques were unlike any of my previous physical therapy treatments and offered immediate relief. Within two weeks I was sleeping without pain and the stiffness was abating. My leg is now out straight and I have returned to pain free walking and the recreational activities I enjoy. I am now happy I had the right arthritic knee joint replaced and only wish I had gone to Peter s clinic immediately following the surgery. Peter P.
