2 Diuretics Why do I need this medication? Diuretics are fluid pills or water pills that are used to help the body get rid of water. They are used to treat high blood pressure and fluid retention (edema) caused by a number of different medical conditions such as heart, kidney, or liver disease. Examples: Furosemide (Lasix ) Hydrochlorothizide (Hydrodiuril ) Hydrochlorothiazide/Amiloride (Moduret ) Triamterene/Hydrochlorothiazide (Dyazide ) Metolazone (Zaroxolyn ) Spironolactone (Aldactone ) My medication is How to take and store this medicine Your doctor will tell you how much to take and how often. Keep all medicine out of the reach of children. Tablets Take this medicine exactly as your doctor ordered. Even if you feel fine your blood pressure can still be high. You will need to go to the bathroom more often while you are taking this medicine. To keep from having to go too often during the night, take your diuretic in the 1
3 morning. If your prescription requires you to take your medicine more than once daily, ask your doctor or pharmacist when the best time would be to take the later doses to help you avoid this problem. Your doctor may instruct you to weigh yourself each day to decide how much diuretic you need to take. Store at room temperature, away from heat, moisture and direct light. If you miss a dose Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next regular dose, wait until then to take your medicine and skip the missed dose. Do not take two doses at the same time. Drugs and foods to avoid Ask your doctor or pharmacist before taking any other medicine, including over-the-counter products. Make sure your doctor knows if you are taking any of the following medicines: lithium, cortisone drugs (such as prednisone), digoxin (Lanoxin ), warfarin, cholestyramine resin (Questran ), other diuretics or medicines to treat blood pressure, insulin or oral medicines to control diabetes. It is best to not drink alcohol while taking this medicine however an occasional drink will not be harmful. 2
4 Warnings Tell your doctor if you have gout, pancreatitis, liver or kidney disease, diabetes, or lupus. As with any medicine, talk with your doctor before use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. You may need to eat or drink foods containing potassium to prevent potassium loss while taking this medicine - check with your doctor. Some symptoms of low potassium are muscle cramps and extreme weakness. Some diuretic products contain two different drugs one of which will help prevent potassium loss. If you are taking one of these drugs you may need to avoid high potassium foods and salt substitutes which often contain potassium. Make sure you know which type of diuretic you are taking - check with your doctor or pharmacist. This medicine may increase the level of sugar in your blood. If you have diabetes you will need to monitor your blood sugars more closely when you are started on a diuretic. Your insulin or medication may need to be adjusted. This medicine can worsen gout. This medicine can make your skin sensitive to sunlight. Use a sunscreen when outdoors. Your pharmacist can help you select a good one. Avoid sunlamps or tanning beds. To help avoid dizziness from this medicine, stand up slowly from a sitting or lying position. 3
5 Side effects Call your doctor right away if you have: Irregular heartbeat. Wheezing or difficulty breathing. Skin rash, hives or itching. Muscle weakness, pain or cramps. Painful or difficult urination. If you have problems with these less serious side effects, talk with your doctor: Dizziness, drowsiness or headache. Decreased sexual ability. Upset stomach, nausea or loss of appetite. Diarrhea or constipation. If you have other side effects that you think are caused by this medicine, tell your doctor or pharmacist. 4
