1 Do you have unanswered questions or uncertainties about hip and/or knee replacement for osteoarthritis? Do you think that answering those questions through research will help to improve the lives of people with hip and/or knee osteoarthritis who have had, or are considering having, a knee and/or hip replacement? The NIHR Oxford Musculoskeletal Biomedical Research Unit, in partnership with the James Lind Alliance (JLA), with funding from the NIHR Oxford Biomedical Research Centre, has set up this Priority Setting Partnership (PSP) to identify uncertainties about hip and knee replacements for people with osteoarthritis. The uncertainties identified will be important to patients and clinicians, who will work together to prioritise them for research. This is your chance to make your views known. If you would like to participate, please complete the following short survey (which should not take you more than 10 minutes), and tell us about uncertainties that you wish to be entered in the prioritisation process. You can find more information about the PSP and this survey on our website by ing hipandkneepsp@ndorms.ox.ac.uk; or by telephoning Consent: As part of this process, your question may be published in the UK Database of Uncertainties about the Effect of Treatments (DUETs), and by participating in the survey you are agreeing to allow us to publish your question(s). Your name will NOT be published in association with the question. For further information, or to see an example of what this will look like, please go to Page 1 of 6

2 1. What question(s) about hip and / or knee replacement would you like to see answered by research? (You can submit as many or as few as you like. Please see below for information to help you consider your question/s.) Please continue overleaf if you run out of space to write. What are 'unanswered' questions? These are questions that cannot be answered at the moment by existing research. As outlined in the diagram below, these 'unanswered' questions could relate to any of the stages in the patient pathway for hip and/or knee joint replacement: Care of patients with hip and / or knee osteoarthritis; Making decisions about when to have a hip and / or knee replacement; Predicting the likelihood of success following hip and / or knee replacement; Rehabilitation following hip and / or knee replacement; Long term care and monitoring of patients who have had hip and / or knee replacement. Page 2 of 6

3 Examples To help you understand what an 'unanswered question' is, here are some examples of unanswered questions that were submitted for other conditions: Is it possible to constantly and accurately monitor blood sugar levels in people with type 1 diabetes? Are breathing exercises helpful in controlling asthma? How safe is it for my baby if I am breastfeeding and taking antidepressant medication? 2. Do you have a personal or professional connection to hip and/or knee replacement? For example, this could be because you or a family member or friend have had (or are being considered for) hip and/or knee replacement; or because you are a health, social care or research professional. Yes Personal connection Yes Professional connection No connection If you have both a personal and a professional connection to knee and/or hip replacement you may wish to highlight this in the 'Any other comments' section at the end of the survey and mention your professional role (e.g. Doctor-GP, Physiotherapist, Professional Carer). Please also note that questions with the asterisk (*) require an answer. Page 3 of 6

4 4. *Which of the following describe(s) your personal connection to hip or knee replacement? Please select all that apply Hip Knee I have osteoarthritis and am considering having a joint replacement A family member or friend has osteoarthritis and is considering having a joint replacement I am a carer for someone with osteoarthritis who is considering having a joint replacement I have had joint replacement(s) I am a carer for someone who has had joint replacement(s) A family member or friend has had joint replacement(s 5.
