1 ACTA UNIVERSITATIS PALACKIANAE OLOMUCENSIS FACULTAS RERUM NATURALIUM ( ) BIOLOGICA LESS COMMON DERMATOGLYPHIC PATTERNS ON THE PALM IN MORAVIAN POPULATION Václav Hajn Department of Zoology and Anthropology Faculty of Natural Science, Palacký University, Tř. Svobody 26, Olomouc, Czech Republic Received February 25, 2002; accepted April 2, 2002 Key words: Dermatoglyphics, very rare dermatoglyphic patterns on human palm, northern Moravia, Czech Republic. Abstract In the paper are presented instances of rare dermatoglyphic patterns on human palm, found during a survey of the normal population in Olomouc (northern Moravia, Czech Republic). The frequency of these patterns in normal population is estimated to be 1 : 10,000 to 1 : 100,000. They are a complicated pattern on the hypothenar, reduction of triradius d, whorls in interdigital areas and tended arch in the area of thenar/1st interdigital area. Introduction In dermatoglyphic surveys, from time to time, some rare dermatoglyphic patterns are found. Those discovered on human palm in a survey of Moravian population in Olomouc are presented in the following text. Material and method The material of this work is the rare occurrence of dermatoglyphic patterns, discovered in a survey of normal healthy population in Olomouc (northern Moravia, Czech Republic). The frequency of the occurrence of the described patterns in normal population is generally estimated within the range 1 : 10,000 1 : 100,000 persons. The prints were obtained with the common technique, i. e. printing on the paper with 141
2 a special black dye for paper. The prints were interpreted according to the method of Cummins and Midle Discussion The first instance is a complicated pattern on the hypothenar of the proband s right hand see fig. 1 and scheme 1. On the hypothenar two ulnar loops are found, of which the distal loop takes up practically the whole area of the hypothenar. In the dominating distal loop three more loops are found, rolled into each other. On the hypothenar are found in general only exceptionally three axial traradii in this case there are four. A similar pattern was described by Hajn On the proband s left hand is a whorl included in the ulnar loop, under which an ulnar arch is situated see fig. 2 and scheme 2. The second instance is the reduction of the triradius d on the proband s right hand see fig. 3. It is an exceptionally rare case from all possible reductions of the triradii. The reduction of triradius d was described e. g. by Hajn 1964, Holt 1978, Holt and Sharma 1977, Wertelecki, Plato and Plato 1980 and Okajima, Iwayanagi and Inouye On the proband s left hand no reduction of triradius d was found. The third instance are the whorls in the 3rd and 4th interdigital areas. The existence of the whorl in some interdigital area is in itself very rare. The simultaneous occurrence of two whorls, in the 3rd and 4th interdigital area, moreover in symmetrical arrangement on both hands of the proband, may be regarded as a unique find see figs. 4 and 5. The fourth instance is the pattern in the area of the thenar and the 1st interdigital area. These two areas are topologically closely interconnected and therefore are usually evaluated together. In this part of the palm the right patterns are rare in normal population, only up to 10 percent. Most often they are proximal or distal loops, less often the so-called Q-figures, and sporadically whorls. On the proband s left hand a pattern was found that might be described as tended arch with a hint of tendency towards a radio-distally oriented loop. On the proband s right hand, two loops directed proximally are found in this area see figs. 6 and
