1 Lesson 6.9a Disorder Pamphlet Due Date: FRIDY, Feb 24th Name: Date: Period: ssigned Disorder: disorders are hereditary conditions caused by defective genes. You will be assigned a genetic disorder. Once you research your disorder, you and your partner(s) will create an informational pamphlet to educate your classmates about the disorder. Text in your pamphlet must be handwritten by you (with evidence of both partner s writing) and should address the following information: 1. Statistics. (Examples: How many people live with the disorder in the U.S.? Worldwide? Is it more prominent in certain populations?) 2. How is the disorder passed on (inherited) from generation to generation? 3. The genotype or karyotype of individuals who have the disorder. You don t necessarily have to give alleles; instead you can describe genotype. Example: If a disorder is autosomal dominant you can state that individuals that are homozygous dominant or heterozygous will express the disorder. If the disorder is still being investigated, discuss possible or known gene mutations and chromosome location. If a disorder is sex-linked, be sure to state if it is X-linked or Y-linked. If the disorder involves and extra or missing chromosome, identify which chromosome. 4. The genotype or karyotype of individuals who do not have the disorder. 5. Phenotype of individuals who have the disorder (such as symptoms, complications, appearance etc). 6. Diagnosis & Treatments/ Cures (Examples: re they available and if so, what are they? If not, are they being developed and what ideas do doctors and scientists have so far?) 7. IF PPLICBLE: wareness/fundraising Efforts & Possible forms and/or related disorders (Is there more than one category of this disorder? Or does it belong to a larger group of disorders?)
