1 . I, SACS~COC SOUTHERN ASSOCIATION OF COLLEGES AND SCHOOLS COMMISSION ON COLLEGES Dr. Robert J. Sheehan Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs Coastal Carolina University P.O. Adding the new tracks will involve slightly modifying the current business core and major credit requirements, renaming. existing course acronyms and numbers, and developing the new courses. No new faculty members or learning, physical, or financial resources will be required. Because the specialization tracks are not significantly different from programs currently offered at the University and require minimal new courses and no new resources, they are not considered to be substantive changes. We acknowledge the information, wid add it to our files, and request no further information. Best regards, Belle S. Wheelan, Ph.D. President BSW/ABC:efk cc: Dr. David A. Commission on Colleges 1866 Southern Lane Decatur, GA Dear Dr. Wheelan: Thank you for your letter dated March 30,2012. This letter serves to provide additional information, per your request, relative to Coastal Carolina University's plan to add four new specialization tracks within the current Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in Management program. 1. Programs similar to the proposed specialization tracks which are already approved and offered by the institution. The major in general management is already offered through the Department of Management and Decision Sciences in the Wall College of Business. The proposed addition of four specialization tracks is not a significant departure from the requirements ofthe current management major. The proposal consists of slightly modifying the current business core and major credit requirements, renaming existing course acronyms and numbers, and developing ten new management courses which are spread across the four specialization tracks. Ofthe four specialization tracks, one includes four ofthe new courses while the remaining three include three or fewer new courses in their offerings. A comparison between the old and new program requirements is as follows: The acronym and number was changed for the following courses; however, the course content was not. These courses have all been offered as part ofthe current management major..~ ~ P.O. Box Conway, SC fax

The creation of these
12 concentrations will allow the student to obtain a more focused preparation in a chosen area of management. All tracks will consist of 18 credit hours. During Management Program assessment, four sources of information indicated a need to offer concentration options: Students, Employers of Management Majors, Community Needs and Institutional Expectations at the Aspirant Level. All external constituents and our students indicated that concentrations are of great interest and importance. Student Comments from a survey of almost 300 business students in general business courses, ranging from lower division through graduating seniors, indicate a strong interest in the concentrations presented. Employers of Management students, from an assessment of job announcements posted online during the Fall of 2011, desire several skills related to our concentration options. Summarizing the results: first and highest level of desiring is an ability to communicate; second was tied between working/leading teams and accomplishing organizational goals; third included solving business problems and directing others in accomplishing tasks; fourth saw a tie among working with others of diverse backgrounds, leading through innovation, having self-discipline, managing professional networks, managing projects and being a self-starter; at the fifth level was recognizing business opportunities and being adaptable. Concentration options provide a focused way to demonstrate many of these specific and desired competencies. Community Needs are confirmed by the representative membership of the College of Business Board of Visitors. Institutional Expectations of Aspirant Universities were determined by examining aspirant universities for management concentrations, and we found that ALL programs offered concentration options. 9.
