What Your Employees Need to Know About Prostate Cancer 1

Who We Are Houston's oldest & largest chapter of a international prostate cancer support organization - non-profit 501(c)3 25 Years of service to the greater Houston area Our Mission: Help men at risk through education and support Increase public awareness about detection, diagnosis, and treatment options Advocate for greater public/private funding for research Encourage open discussion about prostate cancer 2

Why Prostate Cancer Education is Important 230,000 new cases annually - one in seven lifetime risk Present in more than 2.5 million men in U.S. 30,000 men die each year from the disease Second only to lung cancer in annual cancer deaths for men Similar incidence & mortality as Breast Cancer 3

Why Do Men Have a Prostate A walnut-sized gland that manufactures fluid for semen In a difficult area of the male anatomy to reach If cells mutate & grow abnormally, tumors can form Tumors eventually spread to other parts of the body and can lead to death 4

Good News/Bad News Treatable & curable if detected early Occurs mostly in men over 45 Majority of the cancers are slow growing But some become aggressive and lethal Higher risk and mortality for African American men 5

Detection and Diagnosis Annual check-up critical PSA Test and DRE used for screening Biopsy needed if cancer is suspected Pathologist judges cancer s extent and aggressiveness Multiple factors used in making a treatment recommendation 6

Options for Initial Treatment Monitor Image Test Decide Traditional Robotic External Beam Internal Seeds Proton Beam Focal Therapy - Cryosurgery - High Intensity Focused Ultrasound - Laser Ablation 7

Issues & Challenges Concerns about over-treatment Potential of significant side effects No sure cure for aggressive disease that has spread to other parts of the body High cost of detection and treatment options Controversy over screening 8

American Cancer Society Recommendations for PSA Screening Talk to your care provider about the PSA Test: Age 50 with average risk 45 for African American men and men who have a father or brother with prostate cancer 40 for men with more than one first-degree relative who has had the disease Some organizations would subtract five years from each of the above categories 9

How Tex US TOO Reaches Out to the Community Monthly meetings at St Luke s United Methodist Church Focus on fellowship, education, and peer counseling Medical experts speak on prostate cancer topics Support group discussions for patients, survivors and loved ones Hotline, website, and monthly newsletter (350 subscribers) Health Fairs, Occupational Safety Meetings, Speakers Program Dad s Day 5K run with the help of local sponsors 10
